We currently have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated in vivo Senior Scientist with strong expertise in tumour models with respect to inflammation and immunology to join our to join our Immuno-Oncology Discovery team based at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and Granta Park sites in Cambridge (UK).

Main Duties and Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly motivated in vivo Senior Scientist in the Immuno-Oncology Discovery team with deep scientific and technical expertise in the evaluation of immunotherapies using preclinical in vivo models to join our team in Cambridge, UK.

As a Senior Scientist you will be a key member of a team focussed on supporting immuno-oncology projects through the drug discovery process. You will bring your theoretical and practical expertise in the application of preclinical models to deliver decision-making data for our immuno-oncology research projects.

You will spend the majority of your time in the laboratories within the Oncology Research group, and you will support projects aligned with one of AZ Oncology’s key focus areas, immuno-oncology. You will focus on developing, designing, running and analysing in vivo and ex vivo experiments to understand the effect of drugs in complex model systems. You may also perform in vitro immune assays to support projects in the immuno-oncology pipeline.

You will carry out in-depth ex vivo analysis of samples from tumour studies (e.g. high-dimensional flow cytometry, ELISA, RNAseq etc), to understand the effect of test substances on immune function in complex preclinical models (including humanised mouse models). You will drive innovation in preclinical modelling and actively keep up-to-date with new technological developments.

Essential Requirements

  • PhD (or equivalent) in a biological science or BSc /MSc (or equivalent) plus significant experience in a relevant scientific discipline such as immunology or cancer research
  • Hands-on experience with animal handling and procedures including dissection and tissue collection and running in vivo models, particularly oncology models.
  • Possession of a range of ex vivo/ in vitro skills that can be applied to cancer immunology research. This includes tissue culture techniques for cell-based immunoassays, experience working with immune cells, ex vivo immunobiology techniques such as complex flow cytometry, ELISA and RNAseq workflows.
  • Understanding and enthusiasm for tumour immunology and cancer therapies.
  • Expertise in design, statistical analysis and interpretation of in vivo studies.
  • Experience preparing written scientific reports (e.g. manuscripts) and oral presentations (e.g. slides, posters).
  • Willingness to work flexibly; including occasional evenings as necessary.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience working in the field of immuno-oncology within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, or in academia.
  • Experience using preclinical mouse models of tumour immunology
  • Experience working with humanised mouse models
  • Experience with advanced flow cytometry techniques and analysis (ie. spectral flow cytometry, OMIQ)
  • Home Office Licence (Modules 1-4) or equivalent qualification for animal work and experience working under Home Office Regulations (as a Personal Licence Holder)
  • Publications in top-tier scientific journals
