This is an exciting opportunity for an operational manager with a passion for leadership to join the Radiotherapy and Proton Services Directorate at The Christie.
As the Principal Operations Radiographer/Centre Manager for The Christie @ Macclesfield, the post holder will head up the team responsible for the delivery of Radiotherapy in Macclesfield whilst supporting the SACT, Haematology and Pharmacy services as the Manager.
Supported by the Clinical Service Manager for Radiotherapy, they will be empowered to practice their patient-centred leadership whilst continuing the clinical and technical development which has brought the most advanced radiotherapy techniques closer to home.
This post requires an individual who is enthusiastic, motivated and dynamic. They will possess demonstrable experience as a compassionate, values-led leader who role models positive behaviours and puts the patient at the centre of everything that they do.

The Principal Operations Radiographer/Centre Manager will provide leadership and direction as well as strategic and clinical management for all staff within their portfolio to ensure the provision of a modern, patient-focused radiotherapy service.
The post holder will have appropriate clinical experience within a radiotherapy setting. They will ensure that all resources allocated to the Department are used efficiently and effectively and will be responsible for performance management and improvement within their areas of responsibility. In doing so, they ought to be competent when it comes to delivering against qualitative and quantitative service targets.
The Principal Operations Radiographer/Centre Manager will work interdependently with both clinical and non-clinical teams to develop and promote systems to ensure that safe services are provided in line with best practice guidelines and policy.
The post holder will also work closely with the CSM for Radiotherapy and the other Principal Radiographers to ensure effective performance across the service. They will be a member of the Radiotherapy senior team, helping to deliver results on a directorate level.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country. We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years. We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

Communication
The post holder will provide, receive and analyse highly complex, information on advanced radiotherapy in order to understand current pathways and suggest and implement improvements to resolve key issues. Collaboration, motivation, negotiation, training, empathetic and re-assurance skills will be routinely utilised. The post holder will be involved in presenting complex information to a large group of staffs, at national or international conferences and to members of the public. They will collate and disseminate process pathways, negotiating with both internal and external stakeholders to insure prompt and reliable implementation.

The post holder will lecture to radiographers, dosimetrists, postgraduate scientists, doctors in training and others and assist in the organisation of the department’s teaching programmes.

They will publish results in appropriate forums so that The Christie experience is widely communicated to the wider NHS community.

The post holder will be required to:

Knowledge Training and Experience
The post holder will have highly developed specialist knowledge of radiotherapy and/or quality improvement methodologies, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience. They will have acquired this through a combination of in-depth experience and postgraduate post-registration study, such as that obtained through a master’s degree. They will have significant experience in operational management and pathway definition and will have a working knowledge of national policies applicable to radiotherapy.

Analytical and Judgemental Skills
The post holder’s key role will be to undertake scoping exercises on current pathways and propose more effective and efficient replacements. As such will have to assess complex facts and situations, using analytical skill, interpretation and comparison of a range of options using a wide variety of assessment methods and where competing, contradictory or unclear inputs are expected.

Planning and Organisational
The post holder will plan and organise complex activities. Plans will be formulated and adjusted to respond with developments and changes in circumstances. This will involve developing, structuring and scheduling activities, including the allocation of tasks to colleagues, both within the Radiotherapy Department or from partner organisations (other Trust Departments and regional and national stakeholders). They will have responsibility to lead on implementation in the clinical setting of novel pathways.

Physical Skills
As a therapeutic radiographer, the post holder will be expected to maintain the core clinical competencies and as such will maintain the physical skills required to undertake treatment preparation or treatment. These highly-developed physical skills require millimetre accuracy in the utilisation of complex machinery in a clinical setting where there is a very narrow margin for error and precision is vital for patient care. As such, the post requires highly developed physical skills, where a high degree of precision and high levels of hand, eye and sensory co-ordination are essential.

Responsibility for Patient/Client Care
As the lead radiographer for the Macclesfield Radiotherapy service, the post holder will provides highly specialist clinical and technical services. They will provide highly specialised advice to the Radiotherapy Multi-Professional Team which contributes to the design, implementation and monitoring of their radiotherapy elements of patient pathways for cancers and non-malignant conditions in the local and cross-site settings.
Responsibility for Policy/Service Development
The post holder will have their specialism in service management and as such will propose changes to policy and service across the radiotherapy patient pathway. They will have an impact beyond their own area and will ensure that they collaborate with clinical oncologists, diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers, clinical scientists, clinical dosimitrists and administrators within and outside of the Trust, such that they implement service improvements across all sites.
