Are you interested in returning to the Midwifery profession? We have an exciting opportunity for you to come and work on a 6-month fixed term contract as a Return to Practice Midwife, with our outstanding team at Gloucestershire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT). (Please note you must of been previously registered with the NMC)

We are looking to recruit Midwifes who have let their NMC pin lapse and return to us a as a band 3 Return to Practice Midwife. We have full and part time positions available across the trust.

On completion of regaining your NMC pin you will transition to a band 5 position and will be offered the opportunity to join our preceptorship programme.

We, at GHNHSFT are offering two routes into return to practice. At interview we will discuss which route is most suited for you.

• NMC approved Programme: We have partnered with The University of the West of England (UWE), which is funded by NHSE Workforce, Training and Education where you can undertake the return to practice course. You will be required to attend 12 study days for the first 6 weeks of your course. You will then be supported by your team in practice to complete your practice documentation. You are also required to work a minimum of 450 hours. At the end of your course you will be required to take an OSCE (test of competence) exam.
• OSCE (Test of competence): If would prefer this route you can undertake an OSCE course and in Plymouth. This examination and training are fully funded by NHSE Workforce, Training and Education. Prior to starting this route, you will be required to undertake a computer-based learning (CBT) test of competence part 1 before your agreed start date.

• Have previously held an NMC registration.
• Complete a Trust induction and all mandatory training as directed by GHT.
• Have proficient attitudes and behaviours compatible with GHT and NHS Values.
• Deliver high quality, compassionate care as a team member under the direction of a Registered Midwife (or other registered care professional dependent on setting) with a focus on promoting health and independence as required within set protocols/policies and within the scope of the band 3 Health Care Support Worker remit.
• Working with a Practice Assessor in the clinical area, take responsibility for developing own clinical competence, leadership and reflective practice skills within the workplace and maintaining all required evidence.
• Work in an effective and organised manner demonstrating excellent time management and organisational skills.
• Insight into how to evaluate own strengths and development needs, seeking advice where appropriate.
• To work on a shift rota which is determined by service requirements but conforms to working time regulations.
• The Return to Practice Nurse undertaking this role must take responsibility for balancing requirements of the remit of a Health Care Support Worker, band 3 job with ongoing academic study, seeking advice and support as appropriate from practice assessors, practice supervisors, TOC leads, University, Return to Practice lead and GHT PEF.
• Undertake regular progress reviews with GHT Practice Education Facilitators (PEF).
• Contribute towards developing a culture of learning and innovation, developing high quality learning environments.
• This role requires the post holder to develop and improve practical and theoretical knowledge, competence and skills through the attendance at a recognised, formal ‘Return to Practice’ Programme, completing 450 clinical hours ,or undertaking preparation within GHT for a Test of Competence (TOC) examination successfully completing all components of the programme within the contract period. On completion and the awarding of their NMC PIN, they will be entitled to apply for a Registered Nurse (Band 5) position with Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT).

• Develop an understanding of all elements of the nursing process and be able to assist the registered Midwife in the on-going assessment, planning, management and evaluation of care.
• Support individuals with all aspects of care including daily living, providing person-centred care and promoting health and independence.
• Perform and record clinical observations.
• Accurately record nutritional and fluid intake.
• Ensure the privacy, dignity and safety of individuals is maintained at all times.
• Recognise issues relating to safeguarding vulnerable children and adults and report any problems or raise concerns to the appropriate registered care professionals.
• Assist in the assessment of and contribute to the management of risk across several areas within the environment where care is being administered.
• Develop a working knowledge of other providers’ resources and referral systems to ensure individual’s needs are met, within parameters of practice.
• Demonstrate good understanding of principles of consent and ensure valid consent is obtained prior to undertaking nursing and care procedures.
• Demonstrate good understanding of the Mental Capacity Act / Deprivation of Liberties and applies principles to everyday practice seeking advice / guidance from the Registered Nurse or registered care professional as required.
• Adhere to legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines both local and national.
• Regularly attend workplace and staff engagement meetings and contribute positively to discussions about the improvement of care.
• Demonstrate the ability to recognise changing priorities, seeking advice and guidance from the Registered Nurse or other registered care professionals as appropriate.
• Assist in the implementation of appropriate actions to meet the specific physical, emotional and psychological, social, cultural and spiritual needs of individuals and carers.
• Engage in reflective practice including management of self and reflection on own reactions, asking questions and reflecting on answers given.
• Report near misses and untoward incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies, injury or medicine administration errors as detailed in the departmental and Trust protocols. Assist lead staff in investigating incidents as required.
• Ensure a smart, professional image that enhances the public perception of the Trust and the professionalism of its staff is portrayed.
• Act at all times in a manner, which illustrates respect for privacy, dignity and confidentiality.
• Recognise the need to escalate the deterioration of a patient condition to the appropriate staff member.
• Respond to emergency situations with composure, maintaining patient safety and seeking immediate support, supporting the patient, family and other staff as required.
• Prioritise and organise own workload under direction from the Registered Practitioner/ Assistant Practitioner.
