Job Description

Main Responsibilities:

To manage the Student Counselling Manager, two physical health College Nurses and two Emotional Literacy Support Assistants in line with professional standards.

To coordinate Barton Peveril’s provision for students’ mental health needs, including strategic responsibility for training non-specialist staff and for specialist staff interventions.

To oversee the mental health and wellbeing interventions that take place in college. In practice, this could mean developing pathways to support more vulnerable young people with mental health or other needs; coordinating the delivery of specialised interventions and liaising with external agencies such as local CAMHS, Mental Health Support Teams or local community provision

Evaluate the outcome of interventions on students’ wellbeing and attainment to understand what is working and make any necessary changes to ensure effective support is provided

To manage a caseload of young people who are high/medium risk with complex mental health and social care needs.

To provide specialist assessment, evidence-based interventions, advice and support for students, carers and families as appropriate to specialist areas of work in accordance with NICE guidelines.

To recognise potential crisis situations and act responsively and responsibly to resolve the situation, seeking assistance if required.

To undertake both group and person-centred one-to-one intervention.

To take a key role in the design, promotion and delivery of relevant advice, support and training to staff relating to student wellbeing, serious incident support and mental health awareness and promotion.

To be a resource for specialist advice and information to other colleagues, young people and their families/carers with mental health issues.

To promote shared decision making with young people/families/carers as appropriate, involving them in all aspects of care.

To provide assertive outreach to young people and their families/carers to monitor their mental state and risk and help re-integrate into an educational setting.

To write up confidential notes from student meetings and keep records in accordance with relevant ethics and confidentiality guidelines.
To comply with relevant professional practice guidelines, including CPD requirements.

To refer young people to alternative services or to a high intensity support service if necessary.
To advise and signpost education staff on further information to ensure children and young people get the right support.
To uphold the principles of the NMC code of professional conduct at all times.
