Job Description

We are seeking a laboratory technician to join the recently established Oxford Centre for Microbiome Studies (OCMS). The OCMS is a new Oxford initiative within the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences at the University of Oxford. The OCMS is overseen by Professor Fiona Powrie and Dr Jethro Johnson and provides support for all aspects of microbiome research, both for established microbiome researchers and for researchers who are new to the field. You will provide experimental and technical support for OCMS laboratory work. This includes supporting in vivo experiments for OCMS users, coordinating and processing samples and performing microbial culturing. Full training will be given, and this position would suit someone interested in pursuing a career in laboratory-based research.
You will be responsible for receiving, storing and processing OCMS samples and updating the associated databases (samples may include blood, urine and faecal material). You will provide assistance in OCMS activities, including genome and metagenome sequencing and microbiological testing and be responsible for growing bacterial strains, including media preparation. You will collate results and communicate them to appropriate members of the team both in writing and in person and comply with local, departmental and University wide safety regulations.
You must have experience of working in a laboratory environment and be educated to at least A-level or equivalent qualification in science. Strong attention to detail, with the ability to organise samples and record results in a clear and organised fashion and experience working with nucleic acids, for example DNA extraction is essential. You must have a demonstrable interest in scientific literature relating to the microbiome and IT skills including a knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint programs. Previous practical experience of working with hazardous chemicals and bacterial or fungal cell culture is desirable.
This is a fixed-term, full time position for 2 years.
Due to the nature of the research at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, this job will require additional security pre-employment checks:
  • A satisfactory basic Disclosure and Barring Service check
  • University security screening (eg identity checks)
The closing date for this position is 12 noon on Thursday 25 May 2023. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application.
A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 4: £24,715 - £28,131 per annum) with commensurate reduction in responsibilities if a suitable candidate cannot be found to fill the Grade 5 position.
