Head of English
Felixstowe School
Start date: September 2023
Salary: MPR/UPR (FTE £28,000 - £43,685 per annum) plus TLR1 £14,732
Contract: Permanent, full time
We are looking to appoint an innovative and experienced full time Head of English on a permanent contract basis.
You will be joining a hard-working, well-qualified and very friendly group of teachers who want the English subject to be seen as lively and exciting. You will provide clear and cohesive leadership and direction in teaching and learning, managing and motivating teaching and support colleagues in developing innovative teaching strategies to enhance the quality of teaching, learning and achievement. You will also have a whole-school responsibility for reading across the school.
As well as being a core subject, English in the curriculum is key to helping students develop the ability to sympathise and empathise, to question the world in which we live, and explore the range of human behaviours and responses. In Key Stage 3, students explore a range of challenging texts, exploring deeply profound questions with the primary goal of building thoughtful, kind and empathetic human beings who will enter the wider world and enrich it with ideas and compassion. The Key Stage 3 curriculum also explores media, adding to the same key themes the idea of bias, digital narrative and the impact of coupling images with words, so that young people are prepared for life and empowered with the knowledge to make informed decisions. In Key Stage 4, students are prepared with a strong academic focus for their GCSEs in Literature and Language, This solid bedrock has ensured that at Key Stage 5, the uptake of English Literature and Language continues to grow, and students are well prepared for their future lives and careers with a solid foundation of English, as well as a wider curiosity around the use of language in the media and wider world.
You will be a team player within Felixstowe School and within the wider Trust. You will be keen to lead your team to enhance the extra-curricular offer, improve overall teaching and learning and ensure students and your team meet their potential.
