Job Description

You will form part of the Clinical Engineering Innovation (CEI) team in Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and will be primarily responsible for managing medical device design and development projects.

You can expect to use your skills in project planning and management, and to lead on technical & user research, translation of user needs, definition of technical requirements, concept development and prototyping. It is expected that you will contribute to all phases of the development pathway, and will be able to work proactively in documenting projects in accordance with regulatory frameworks. There are opportunities to lead or contribute to medical device research studies and to explore the commercialisation of devices.

CEI works at all stages of the design & development pathway, with an emphasis on the early stages of product development. In particular, we are looking for an individual who can contribute to synthesis of unmet needs, product definition and early concept development.

You will be primarily responsible for managing and delivering medical device design and development projects. Working as part of a team of scientists, design engineers and technical staff, you will work to design and develop innovative engineering and technical solutions to meet clinical needs which cannot be met by existing solutions. The team works dynamically to meet the needs of individual projects, meaning you will take part in a broad range of activities including needs analysis, research, prototyping, usability studies, clinical and technical evaluation. In all aspects of the role, you would be expected to bring a creative approach, underpinned by sound engineering and scientific practice.

You will bring an analytical engineering approach to the processes of medical device design, development, verification and validation. Our small team has quite a broad design and scientific skillset and when we recruit, we seek candidates who can bring something new into the team. Potential areas which could set a candidate apart are experience in software and/or electronics rapid prototyping, experience in SaMD, experience in user-centred design or in usability engineering.
