Job Description
The post holder will be responsible for delivering the vision of the centre to patients and their carers. This will be achieved through a combination of overseeing the provision of an excellent, welcoming and informative service to people in the centre and reaching out across the organisation to ensure that people are aware of the centre and the services it provides. Cross working with external information and support providers, other organisations and charities is promoted. It is essential to understand what is available to people and families affected by cancer in the community.
The post holder will be expected to deliver appropriate elements of personalised cancer care and work closely with the Head of Nursing for cancer, cancer management team and clinical teams to support health and well-being events, public involvement and work on delivery of the action plan to improve cancer patient’s experience. The role will include being a key link person for the referring of patients and their significant others to our support services including the Macmillan & Dimbleby Citizens Advise Benefit Service.
Although the role will be based at the Denmark Hill hospital site, frequent travel to the South Sites in Bromley (Princess Royal Hospital, Orpington Hospital, Beckenham Beacon and other sites in Bromley) will be expected from the successful candidate
- Oversee the provision of specialist advice, support and information to people affected by cancer, their carers, families and other healthcare professionals across the Trusts Cancer Information and Support Centre sites
- Support the development of a new Cancer Information and Support Centre in the borough of Bromley, overseeing the operation of the new centre
- Be responsible for the performance management of both centres as a service, ensuring effective monitoring of all information and support to all individuals and groups who use the centre
- Lead on the continual development of the Centre and the team to provide a patient information and support service that is needs-led, person-centred and where possible evidence-based
- Responsible for the additional information stands for daily emptying and stocking of information and cleanliness
- Develop an action plan to deliver and meet Macmillan Quality Standards for the Information and Support Centre and to gain full level 4 accreditation
- Recruit, train, manage and support a team of volunteers to provide face to face information and support and other activities to support the smooth running of the service
- Liaise and work alongside a variety of internal and external staff to develop all aspects of the service including collaborating with other staff within the Cicely Saunders Institute and throughout wards and outpatient departments across King’s College Hospital and within South East London Cancer Alliance (SELCA)

- To respond to enquiries for information from individuals, their carers and relatives, using high level communication skills to judge the level of information/support required and provide this directly or refer on to the most appropriate source
- Record any actions or concerns raised on the patients notes (EPR) and advise the patient key worker or clinical team of any health related clinical needs to facilitate access to care and good communication flow
- To facilitate individualised patient care to meet the information and support needs of the individual, based upon the principle of evidence based practice, maintaining a highly professional and confidential standard of work at all times
- To reflect and promote the needs of the patients and their families and take a lead for agreed patient-responsive changes to the service as required
- To produce, implement and monitor Trust guidelines, policies and protocols around the areas of volunteers, complementary therapies, information and support
- To maintain a visible profile throughout the CSI and Trust, acting as a role model and supporting the work of the other health professionals working within cancer and palliative care
- To facilitate the dissemination of cancer and palliative care information within the Trust and link across the Network
- To identify, implement and evaluate new initiatives to enhance the service provision and contribute to Trust and Network activities in relation to patient information and support
- To ensure the equity of services offered by the MISC to reflect the local population needs
- Act as a change agent in response to the patient feed back
- Ensure the service is compliant with the Trust’s Equality and Diversity Policy, supporting the delivery of the Trusts Race Equality Scheme and the Trust’s duty to positively promote race equality and equality of opportunity for disabled people ensuring services are responsive to the needs of equality groups
- To continually develop and enhance own practice in relation to patient information and support provision, leading by example and acting as a resource of expert information, support and advice for other staff groups
