A fantastic opportunity has arisen for both full or part time Consultant Anaesthetists based at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, part of University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust. This is a wonderful opportunity for any new or senior consultant to join our welcoming, friendly well-established team of 24 consultants, 10 SAS Doctors and trainees supporting all general services of the hospital including a busy Emergency Department. You will develop your clinical skills and have opportunity to be involved with leadership, research and audit across all areas of anaesthesia.
As a consultant you will have opportunity to develop special interests in areas such as Obstetric Anaesthesia and regional anaesthesia services. Our consultant-led Obstetric services are provided in a dedicated Women’s unit. Other surgical subspecialties include Colorectal, Breast, Endocrine, Gynecology, Orthopedics, Trauma, Maxillo-facial, Ophthalmology, Urology and ENT.
Consultants at Lancaster also provide daytime theatre cover to Westmorland General Hospital, our green-site operating centre. This site is currently undergoing a large investment to develop its current theatres and increase the site to 6 state of the art theatres.
The Trust comprises 5 sites, of which Royal Lancaster Infirmary and Furness General Hospital offer Intensive Care facilities. These ICUs are covered by a separate resident and consultant team out of hours.
Interviews are scheduled for 24th May 2023
- Assessment and preparation of patients for theatre and provision of peri-operative and immediate post-operative care at Royal Lancaster Infirmary and Westmorland General Hospital, Kendal.
- On-call, non-residential cover of emergency theatres and the obstetric unit, supervising two dedicated resident anaesthetists.
- Contribute to service development in areas of special interest and expertise.
- Undertake and participate in the appraisal process and job planning.
- Satisfy the criteria for revalidation.
- Involvement in undergraduate and post-graduate medical education.
- Undertake personal appraisal and job-planning as part of revalidation.
- Demonstrate evidence-based practice where appropriate.
- Participate in clinical audit, governance and quality improvement.
- Involvement in undergraduate and post-graduate medical education is strongly encouraged and well supported.
- Maintain mandatory training requirements.
We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay

You must hold full GMC with a license to practice and entry on the Specialist Register or anticipating being in receipt of CCT/CESR within six months of interview. Alternatively, a specialist doctor with an interest in obstetric anaesthesia would also be considered for the post.
