Applications are invited for the post of Biomedical Assistant in the Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory based in the Leicestershire Genetics Centre at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
The post holder will undertake the duties required to participate in and to support the Scientific team in the provision of an effective and high-quality cytogenetics service to patients. The post holder will be expected to maintain a high level of accuracy and reliability in defined routine preparative and associated procedures. The post holder will report to and be subject to the supervision and direction of the senior scientists or to other staff as instructed but is expected to routinely work without direct supervision except when problems arise.
The post holder will collaborate with other members of the department or hospital in all matters necessary to achieve maximum efficiency of the service. This role involves the safe daily handling of patient samples and hazardous chemicals according to standard operating procedures

About the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust: (leicestershospitals.nhs.uk)
To assist in the provision of an efficient Cytogenetic Service under the direction of the Scientific staff.
- To undertake general laboratory housekeeping duties including cleaning and sterilising glassware and other equipment, preparation of sterile media and reagents according to SOPs, staining, labelling, filing of microscope slides, preparation of cultures for long term storage
- To demonstrate an understanding of what tests are performed and why they are performed
- To operate and maintain equipment according to SOP’s
- To book in and cross-reference samples and patient details onto the appropriate manual and computerised database.
- To understand and use good sterile technique at all times and especially when using the biological safety cabinets.
- To collect and distribute items throughout the laboratory and where necessary from or to other parts of the hospital.
- To dispose of waste in accordance with laboratory/hospital regulations.
