You will be joining our Passenger Services Directorate responsible for setting the policy and strategic direction for rail passenger services, including implementing the Plan for Rail’s recommendations on a range of reforms.

As Fares Policy Officer, you will take a leading role on a range of activities and in responding to correspondence from a wide variety of external and cross-government stakeholders.

You will support the wider team in shaping and influencing policy and providing briefings to ministers. This role provides the opportunity to work collaboratively with colleagues from across the Department and the wider rail industry to help shape policy and resolve issues.

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Working collaboratively with your team and across Rail Strategy and Services Group as a subject matter expert for fares policy
• Working with colleagues to develop, implement and deliver commitments in the Plan for Rail on fares and ticketing reform
• Providing high-quality briefings and advice to Ministers and Department for Transport senior leaders, and leading or contributing to parliamentary engagement and correspondence
• Working flexibly across Passenger Experience Policy team to support the delivery of other Plan for Rail reform commitments on fares, ticketing and retail transformation
• Supporting the work of the wider passenger experience policy team with contributions to briefings and advice to our senior leaders.

You will have the option to be based either in London attracting the London pay scale, or in Leeds or Birmingham attracting the national pay scale. Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings.

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.

About you

You will have excellent communication skills and demonstrate a high standard of drafting skills to effectively respond to correspondence and produce concise Ministerial briefings.

You will confidently engage with colleagues at all levels and enjoy building positive relationships to achieve objectives.

You will be highly motivated and enjoy taking the initiative to resolve problems, handle changing priorities and co-ordinate workloads against deadlines. You will welcome the autonomy within your role and display a proactive and responsive approach to supporting the wider team.

You will have the ability to grasp complex information quickly and help develop, implement and deliver effective policies.
