Job Description

Are you a Haematology and Blood Transfusion BMS and looking for a new challenge?

This is an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Biomedical Scientist (Band 6 equivalent) at Guys and St Thomas’ Haematology and Blood Transfusion Laboratory.

You will be expected to work in a shared team between Core Haematology and Blood Transfusion, working across both the Guy’s and St Thomas’ sites and gaining exposure to the many different patient types seen at a large teaching hospital.

Upon satisfactory completion of in house training and competency assessment you may be expected to participate in the out of hours rota.

Those without right to work in the UK need not apply.

As a BMS in Haematology and Blood Transfusion the post holder will be responsible for the delivery of a fit-for-purpose medical laboratory service. They will be required to undertake their responsibilities within General Haematology and Blood Transfusion. You will be HCPC registered, ideally having completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology and Blood Transfusion or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and experience, have strong Morphology and Transfusion skills and a willingness to take part and get involved.

The Laboratory

We are UKAS accredited to ISO 15189 standards and are an IBMS accredited training laboratory for both Registration and Specialist Portfolios.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust is a major emergency and specialist hospital, including women’s services, children’s service, acute medicine and elderly care, cardiovascular and critical care; also home to the Evelina Children’s Hospital and Cancer centre. Foryou, this makes for varied and interesting, and sometimes challenging work; no two days are ever the same!

Due to the variety and complexity of some of our patients the work can be very challenging but rewarding as you will gain invaluable scientific experience.

BT uses Bio-Rad IH1000 and IH500 analysers with Winpath LIMS. Routine Haematology utilise Beckman coulter DxH analysers.

We are currently validating Blood Track and Sysmex XN-10 and XN-20 analysers.

Through our Innovation Accelerator Fund, you can apply for finance to get that new innovative scientific project off the ground, and participate with the wider scientific community through symposiums, conferences and other peer group meetings.
