Job Description
The department processes over 1,000,000 specimens per annum. We employ over 100 staff, and provide a comprehensive 7 day service covering bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, virology, serology and parasitology, and molecular testing. You will rotate across these sections. You will be required to work shifts on a 24/7 rota system, which includes weekend and bank holiday working, and early/day/late/night shifts.
The Laboratory is UKAS accredited to ISO 15189. There is a wide range of equipment throughout the department including MALDI-TOF, Sedimax, BD BacTec FX, Serosep Enteric-bio, GeneXpert, BioFire, Hologic Panther, Diasorin Liaison, Qiagen extraction and post elution PCR platforms, ABI7500 real time PCR platforms, Kingfisher PCR extraction and Thermo Quantstudio PCR.
We will only consider applications from candidates who have completed an IBMS Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology or Virology. There are permanent and fixed term positions available.

Your Responsibilities
What you’ll do
- Work a range of shifts including early, late, day and night shifts, and bank holidays and weekends
- Work as part of the laboratory team, providing a high level of Microbiological and virological analysis in order to provide patients with the highest level of diagnosis and treatment
- Rotate through all the different sections in the laboratory
- Supervise and train inexperienced BMS, trainee BMS or non-registered lab staff
What we’re looking for
- Someone with an IBMS Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology or Virology
- You’ll need to be motivated, experienced and enthusiastic
- HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist
- Post registration experience, including a good all-round knowledge of medical microbiology or virology.
- Good communicator
- You must be able to plan and use your own time economically and effectively
- A high degree of motivation and enthusiasm is essential for the role
- Commitment to and focus on quality, demonstrates high standards in all that they do
