About the Role:
This role is a hybrid working position working remotely and from our Birmingham Digital Hub.
You will be joining Platforms team within Enterprise Digital and be responsible for our Capabilities squad whose goal is to make life for the development teams in other parts of the business easier by providing a set of low friction, fully managed cloud capabilities and abstracting these complexities away from the developer – allowing them to focus on code and not infrastructure. The Capabilities squad specialises in delivering lean iterations of strategic IAC (Infrastructure as Code) using non-traditional tools such as Pulumi and implementing tooling that allow developers to develop and deploy to the cloud faster and securely. As a polyglot and hands-on Engineering Manager, your code will lead by example and your teams will look up to you for strategic and technical leadership. You will be a confident solutions designer, able to communicate complex ideas clearly at various levels of the organization and skilled in working with multi-skilled teams to come up with workable solutions.
You will be a great collaborator working with your counterparts and other Engineering Managers within other Platform teams to ensure that our cloud capabilities are first class and provide the best experience to developers each day. You and your teams will also collaborate closely with engineering teams across the tribes -understanding their requirements and building out capabilities to support it.
Job Responsibilities:
- Be a consultant for multiple teams, your deep hands-on experience with multiple development approaches, patterns, and architectures means that you can advise both external teams and your team as to the best way to implement a solution.
- Lead, grow and hire a team of engineers that develop best-in-breed tooling and IAC capabilities that allow developers to go from idea to production in 12 minutes or less
- Create and Lead strategy for a roadmap that caters to the needs of the business and developers.
- Remove manual implementation from workflows and look to automate as much as possible.
- Provide mentorship and career support for the members of your teams - maximising their potential.
- Agile champion for your teams, taking pride in a metrics-based organisation that looks to continually improve itself.
Skills:
- 10+ years hands-on software engineering experience delivering and managing software in production in a commercial setting, ideally in enterprise environments.
- A good level of commercial expertise in core Java and Spring Boot
- 4+ years of experience in building software products in Typescript.
- 2+ years of experience in a team leadership position where you were responsible for career growth and mentorship of team members.
- 3+ years of experience with agile systems development methodologies
- 3+ years' experience with cloud computing on AWS.
- Passion for automation with a reluctance for manual implementation
- Bonus is experience with DevOps tools, process and culture.

The Software Engineering Manager coordinates the execution of the engineering strategy and roadmap that supports BT's commercial strategy through cross functional business partnering and the participation of a team that pursues innovation as well as engineering excellence.
1. Manages and coaches teams of software engineers driving the engineering organisation's ability to deliver high quality code on time and on budget and implementing means of bringing measurability as well as predictability to the engineering organisation's capabilities
2. Oversees the execution of technical decisions, technology choices and architecture for a wide range of high-performance products, capabilities, and platforms, effectively balancing short term impact with long-term transformation
3. Monitors, manages and ensures timely releases from teams by driving compliance with key release quality metrics
4. Consults on complex and strategic issues using advanced technical knowledge, across wider industry and/or specific sectors, and develops bespoke or leading edge, technically complex solutions (e.g., relating to new, untested technology and/or large-scale impact of products)
5. Drives the implementation of the defined technical roadmap to meet the needs of the business, engineering team, and partner teams
6. Implements, engineering and operational excellence initiatives, implementing metrics and processes for regular assessment and improvement
7. Takes a managerial and influencer role in the software engineering function, implementing the technical vision and the pursuit of innovations regarding new technologies, platforms and applications
8. Develops 'best-in-class' engineering for services by ensuring that the services and the components are well-defined and modularised, secure, reliable, diagnosable, actively monitored and reusable
9. Oversees the implementation of new architectures, standards, and methods for large-scale enterprise systems, proactively removing blockers from the team's work
10. Researches, designs and writes new software and performs deep dive data analysis, to identify issues and implement ways to improve working processes within the area of software engineering responsibility, such as avoiding and reducing technical debt
11. Performs complex debugging and troubleshooting of critical issues throughout the development process
12. Supports the implementation of new architectures, standards, and methods for large-scale enterprise systems
13. Coordinates the evaluation and implementation of high-quality tools and automation processes to support continuous delivery and developer productivity
14. Builds and maintains an engineering culture that fosters innovation and creativity while delivering high quality products with predictability and reliability
15. Champions, continuously develops and shares with team knowledge on emerging trends and changes in software engineering
