Leonardo is a leading defence technology company, is recruiting to support the development of Low Observable (LO) sensors for integration on future airborne platforms. Leonardo’s long heritage in sensor development spans technologies such as Radar, Electronic Warfare, Electro Optic & Infrared sensing and Communications. We design and produce innovative sensing products and solutions that are supplied to both Defence and Commercial customers worldwide.
As part of Team Tempest, Leonardo is working with other industry partners (including BAE Systems, Rolls Royce & MBDA), the RAF’s Rapid Capabilities Office, and the UK Ministry of Defence to develop the technologies needed for the next generation of combat air vehicle. As part of this (and other programmes), Leonardo is looking to recruit both experienced and enthusiastic new Engineers to meet the challenges ahead and we have opportunities and sites across the UK (Bristol, Edinburgh, Luton & Southampton).
As an Electromagnetics Engineer, you will be working within a specialist team, where you will develop experience and expertise in applying Electromagnetic principles to the design of the LO aspects of sensor integration. You will have the opportunity to work with and learn from a wide range of technical experts in the wider areas of antenna design, mechanical engineering and material science, not only within Leonardo, but also from the wider team. You will be involved in various stages of development from the concept stage through hardware design, development, manufacture, and design proving and measurement. You will be able to develop an exciting and fulfilling career within our electromagnetics team and gain exposure to current and novel technologies within this field.
Career development opportunities may include development into a Technical Specialist role, or the chance to lead a team. A mixture of formal and on-the-job training will be available to introduce new concepts and build on existing skills and experience.
As part of a growing UK wide team, and depending on your skills and expertise, work may include:
The development of existing product and advanced research into cutting-edge solutions for both new and existing platforms.
Using various EM simulation codes (e.g. CST Microwave Studio, FEKO, HFSS) to analyse and optimise the design and installation impacts of sensors on a ‘stealthy’ vehicle.
Undertake the detailed design and development of antenna/radome (sensor/window) and any frequency selective component, together with their associated electrical, mechanical and functional interfaces.
Technical assessment and modelling of system or subsystem design to ensure compatibility with overall system performance.
Supporting the specification, monitoring, and analysis of Radar Cross Section (RCS) tests and Infrared (IR) tests to support LO design activities.
Investigating design options and where necessary and appropriate, making detailed proposals for preferred design solutions which are compatible with project design, timescales and cost objectives.
Carry out effective monitoring, control and reporting of design activities in accordance with project and company procedures, including all necessary reporting of technical and timescale progress and achievements against agreed project milestones and deliverables.
Present results and designs through both written reports and oral presentations.
You will provide technical assistance and guidance to others, whilst promoting a culture of sharing best practice and process improvement.
Degree or equivalent in a STEM subject or other science-based subject
Experience / Education in at least one of the following areas of Electromagnetics: Low Observables (LO), Stealth Technology, Electromagnetic Capability (EMC), Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), Radiofrequency (RF), Antenna design/modelling or Computational Electromagnetic Modelling (CEM)
Excellent numerical problem solving skills and an aptitude for lateral thinking
The ability to assimilate complicated topics quickly and possess strong communication skills to convey complex subjects to our teams.
Desirable Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge
A Master’s Degree or PhD in a subject such as Antenna Design, Propagation, Electromagnetics, Microwave engineering, Data Analysis of measured data, etc.
Working knowledge of CST Microwave Studio or similar EM modelling tools.
Scientific programming experience. MATLAB is a preferred tool but knowledge of other languages is acceptable
A theoretical or practical knowledge of antenna measurements.
Measurement experience using standard equipment (VNA, Spectrum Analyser, etc.).
Knowledge of antenna design for Radar Cross Section, or measurement of Radar Cross Section within a range.
Due to the nature of this role, you must be able to obtain full SC security clearance with access to UK Eyes Only and ITAR export controlled material.
