Offers are open for an enthusiastic and passionate candidates to join the department of Older People’s Medicine at Ipswich Hospital, part of East Suffolk and North East Essex foundation trust as a full time substantive consultant.
This forward thinking and innovative department is developing services that begin in the heart of the community. We care for patients in their home using the virtual ward, and through the whole span of their journey within the acute hospital - from specialist assessment in the emergency department to seamless specialist care in our frailty assessment base and our short stay frailty unit. We focus on a truly patient-centred care model which is underpinned by expertise in specialist geriatric assessment. Our motivated consultant team is supported by an expanding team of acute care practitioners and allied health professionals.

The successful candidate will join a team of skilled frailty interface practitioners reaching into the front door emergency department, as well as our medical assessment unit, assessing our frail patients at the point of need and helping to streamline their care.
The other aspect of the job will be joining a consultant colleagues covering 14 patients on one of our Older People’s Wards (complex short stay frailty unit), supported by an SpR, CMT and two FY1 doctors. The post holder will be expected to provide enthusiastic and motivated clinical supervision for the junior team.
Duties at ward level will involve a consultant-led board round (may be shared), ward rounds, actively engaging in the governance and development of the ward in to an established short stay frailty unit. The post holder will be expected to provide appropriate clinical leadership to the progressive, innovative multidisciplinary ward team, in conjunction with the other consultants and the ward sister.
We invite those candidates with sub-specialist skills and attributes, for example, onco-geriatrics, orthopaedic liaison, or virtual ward community experience, and we would be happy, where possible to negotiate time within the timetable to allow these to flourish.
We are at a very exciting time at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust as our £150 million development programme takes shape.
Over the next five years, we are changing the landscape of care, bringing additional and improved services to the 1 million people we serve in Suffolk and North East Essex.
At our Ipswich hospital site, we are in the process of building a state-of-the-art Urgent Treatment Centre, co-located with a new Emergency Department which is due to open in Summer ’24. We have a new Acute Medical Same Day Emergency Care unit, co-located with our Medical Emergency Assessment Unit, a recently built Acute Respiratory Care Unit and newly opened new Surgical Assessment Unit. We have an award-winning Frailty Assessment Base, linking directly with our virtual ward programme and community teams, including a comprehensive set of admission avoidance services within our integrated primary and secondary care system. Over the past couple of years, we have also heavily invested in our ward refurbishment programme; ensuring maximised ward specialty adjacencies, refurbishments to include dementia friendly and additional ward areas created to support seasonal pressures.

As part of a major investment programme, at Ipswich Hospital, agreement has been given for a significant investment to deliver a truly transformative model for management of inpatient medical and older persons care. This model has been designed collaboratively by our consultant leads across acute medicine, older people’s services and medical specialties. It aims to deliver: -
- Appropriately resourced 7-day consultant working
- Strengthened GIM rota, improving rotas and providing a better balance of workload across each day of the week; reducing the burden on clinicians associated with Medical Take by reducing the frequency and bolstering the post-take support
- Innovation in patient care and service delivery, allowing the right patient, to see the right clinician, at the right time (7 days per week), ensuring patients are managed from the outset, on the most appropriate ward for their condition(s).
- Early access to specialist advice
- Overall, to deliver greatly improved quality of care for our patients whilst supporting a long-term, sustainable set of consultant job plans
The post-holder will:
- Work with colleagues to provide a consultant-led service with the highest standard of care
- Work with the multi-professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines
- Develop and maintain good working practices within wards, outpatients and A&E
- Collaborate and promote close working links with colleagues in tertiary centres, community services and primary care
- Offer support and leadership to junior medical colleagues, nursing colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary team
