Person specification

The Government Economic Service (GES) Summer Scheme is aimed at economics students who are considering a career in the GES after graduation and would like to know more about the Civil Service. These placements are for up to 12 weeks and take place over the 2023 summer period.


Qualifications

Applicants must be studying for a degree in economics or a joint degree where economics comprises at least 50% of the course so far.

This scheme is only open to students in their penultimate year of undergraduate study and who are on course for a 2:1 or 1st class degree as demonstrated by their first year results.


Where we have asked for candidates to provide a name-blind (anonymous) CV, you will need to ensure you clearly list your year 1 and 2 (year 3 if applicable) degree modules, number of credits per module per year, clearly marking which module is Economics by putting 'econ' next to the modules and your first year degree grade.

You do not need to list your GCSE’s or A-Levels.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills.

During the application process you will be asked to complete an online numeracy test.

Please note: The test deadline is the same as the application deadline.

The GESR Recruitment Team work Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Therefore, technical support will not be available outside of these hours.

The numerical test is not timed. Therefore, you should not need to request extra time to complete this test as a reasonable adjustment. The sift is due to take place from 21 March to 6 April 2023. Interviews/assessments are likely to be held from week commencing 10 April to 5 May 2023. We will try to meet the dates set out in the advert. However, there may be occasions when these dates will change.

Candidates who are successful at the sift stage will receive notification and will be interviewed at one of the participating Departments. Due to the large volume of applications expected, applicants will be randomly allocated for interview at any of the participating departments.



Candidates who are unsuccessful at the sift stage will not be given any feedback or comments.

Feedback will only be provided if you attend an interview.

Occasionally, a Department might withdraw from the scheme before placements are offered or we might have more successful candidates than available placements. In such cases, applicants will be placed in the reserve pool.

Placement Offer

All candidates will be offered a role based on merit. Location preference will be taken into consideration but is not guaranteed.

Please note that some departments require candidates to have a UK footprint of 5 years and no period longer than 3 months outside of the UK to get security clearance.
