About Broadcast and End-User Technology
Broadcast and End-User Technology is one of the four delivery departments within Technology Group, responsible for the specification, design, and provision of the technology which BBC colleagues use every day to undertake their jobs. Our responsibilities are truly end-to-end, from end-user tools and experience, through content creation, studios, newsroom technology systems, to channel assembly and playout. We design and develop the media creation tools, the systems that support commissioning and scheduling and maintain our metadata, and the computers, networks, and remote access technologies which are used by everyone across the organisation.
We aim to deliver the best possible experience for all audiences and strive to provide technology excellence for our production colleagues. We are looking to harness new technology to better enable flexible production and flexible working, and to support the BBC’s drive to net zero by 2030. We recognise that with the move to IP, SaaS, cloud, and REMI; desktop computing and production technology are increasingly two sides of the same coin, and delivering excellence for our colleagues means both need to work seamlessly together.
Systems Engineering
This role will be part of an engineering group of approximately 30 in size, based within a team of approximately 4-8 system engineers who are based in MediaCityUK, Salford. Reporting to a Systems Engineering Team Lead, you will find yourself working on solution design, evaluation and project delivery for media production systems and workflow tools across the BBC – serving digital, TV and radio outputs.
Senior Systems Engineer
The ideal candidate is someone who has previous experience of broadcast systems and software along with a track record of working in a project delivery team. They will need to be self-motivated and able to resolve issues as they arise on the project, working with the wider team including Systems Engineers and Project Managers. They will need to support and assist Solution Managers and other Systems Engineers with project delivery and be able to work closely with the Project Managers to help them plan and prioritise the work.
Main Responsibilities
- Delivering technical improvements for broadcast operations stakeholders while ensuring alignment with technology strategy.
- Play key role in the planning, design, development, integration, commission and test of systems.
- Contribute towards (in some cases lead on) the provision of technical advice and consultancy across a range of projects and products to shape and deliver technical production solutions.
- Work with project, product and technical leads, contractors, suppliers and manufacturers to design and successfully deliver solutions.
- Integrate media systems with existing and new monitoring, and support tools.
- Write, review and take responsibility for technical documentation as part of project and product delivery.
- Contribute to test and resolution of issues throughout the project or the product life cycle
- Operate processes that support the timely delivery of system maintenance, roadmaps and/or project plans.
- Oversee acceptance testing of new installations, ensuring test logs/registers are kept up to date.
- Maintain knowledge of industry and competitor developments.
- Learn new technologies and keep abreast of existing technologies and drive the introduction them where appropriate.
- Provide effective communication to project colleagues and stakeholders, conveying technical information to non-technical staff, either verbally or in written form, to allow for effective and informed reporting and decision-making.
- Provide guidance to team members.
Are you the right candidate?
The right candidate will have experience of design, delivery, testing and support of technical systems and infrastructure within a media technology environment. They will have experience of applying new and emerging technologies which include key operational criteria and meet technology strategy. They will have experience of working in diverse teams to deliver technical solutions from stakeholder requirements using good communication, organisation and professionalism skills to demonstrate resilience and deliver to deadlines.
The right candidate may have prior experience of media and computing technologies or operational workflows. They may have previously operated within company processes and procedures required for solution delivery. They may have experience of mentoring or supporting less experienced colleagues in their career and knowledge development.
