The Design Assurance Engineering Intern role is intended to provide a wide range of experiences and to encourage both industrial and personal development. It involves working on a selection of Military & Aerospace projects that contribute directly to the success of the business and its customers. This is a 12 month internship, and applicants should be studying towards a relevant sandwich degree that recognises a 12 month industrial placement.
Role Description
Design Assurance Engineers are primarily responsible for testing products to provide the company and customers with a high level of confidence that designs are compliant, reliable, and successful in deployment.
You will be involved in ensuring products undergo required testing. This typically involves products undergoing EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) and harsh environmental condition tests such as vibration, temperature, altitude, humidity etc. Most of these tests are performed at our in-house facilities. However, the in-house equipment doesn’t allow for all testing disciplines to be conducted. As a result, you will occasionally travel as part of a team to external test facilities around the country. Your role will not only include performing these tests but may also involve authoring the procedures that dictate how these tests are performed.
For this role you will be required to work with a number of colleagues in a range of departments and roles including Product Managers, Hardware Engineers and Production Technicians in order to provide an exceptional product for our military and aerospace customers. The role will also involve a range of communication to professionals both within and outside of Abaco allowing for networking and improving of communication skills.
The design assurance department is constantly evolving through continuous improvement activities such as LEAN, Six Sigma and 5s so you will be vital in assisting with this effort by hopefully providing fresh ideas.
Key Responsibilities
- To perform in-house vibration, shock & temperature qualification testing
- To support off-site qualification testing in a variety of disciplines
- To produce test documentation such as procedures, reports, analyses etc.
- To provide support to sales and sustainment for queries across the product lifecycle
- To participate in design and functional specification reviews and provide subsequent feedback
- To gain knowledge of the tools and processes required for necessary projects
- To demonstrate initiative and enthusiasm for the technology involved
- To help to instil a culture of excellence at Abaco
Qualifications/Requirements
- Studying Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or similar with an approved sandwich year.
- Desire to develop engineering skills in testing, compliance, and qualification
- Interest in specifications and qualification documentation
- Interest in applying mechanical and thermal expertise to military and aerospace products
- Good problem-solving and creative, solution-building skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills

This is a 12-month Internship and you will need the ability to start at the end of July/beginning of August 2023 depending on the intake date.
