Department

SEI is an international research organisation conducting policy-relevant environmental research around the world. Our York Centre is based at the University of York in the Department of Environment and Geography. SEI York has a broad research profile covering 4 main research areas: air quality and climate change; nature-society relations; sustainable consumption and production; managing natural resources; and urban environments and human health. We have a strong academic track record as well as an international reputation of producing highly credible evidence-based science-to-policy research, engaging with and supporting decision makers at different scales in different parts of the World.

We require an Air Pollution and Climate Change Researcher to become an integral member of our team, working internationally to promote the development of integrated strategies for the mitigation of air pollution and climate change.

Role Description

The team you will join works internationally to support the development of integrated strategies for the mitigation of air pollution and climate change (https://www.sei.org/centres/york/research-areas/air-quality-climate-change/). This research supports the activities of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC http://www.ccacoalition.org), as well as research projects assisting national and sub-national governments plan strategies to achieve development benefits by reducing impacts on human health, crop yields, and contributing to the global drive to combat climate change. This focus of this support are the countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America.

You will work on projects as part of the team that help decision makers at national and sub-national scales to plan their emission reductions and realise multiple benefits, reducing health impacts, limiting global warming, and achieving sustainable development goals. You will work with other colleagues at SEI York to engage with people and train them and help them to develop emission inventories, assess the mitigation potential of various policies and plans for the transport sector and assess the potential of these policies to have additional co-benefits to improve health. The researcher appointed will focus on building the capacity of key stakeholders in partner countries, through providing training on the development of emission inventories, baseline and mitigation scenarios and benefits estimation, including health benefits from reduced air pollution.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • PhD or equivalent experience in environmental science, or another relevant subject related to climate change and air pollution;
  • An interest in the interplay between science, socio-economic impacts and development using a systems-based approach;
  • An interest in supporting the capacity of partners in different countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America to develop emission scenarios and analyse mitigation strategies for air pollution and climate change;
  • Ideally, experience or knowledge of some of the above in relation to specific sectors;
  • Highly numerate and confident in manipulating large spreadsheet databases, with experience of using, and possibly developing, computer models for air pollution assessment.
  • A team player, independently motivated and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to help enhance the capacity of developing country researchers and staff of different governmental agencies.
