Open ended (Permanent)

Full time, 35 hours per week

Edinburgh College of Art is seeking a full-time Lecturer in Film and Moving Image to join the School of Design on an open-ended basis.

The Opportunity:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and pro-active individual to join our dynamic team, for the full-time post of Lecturer in Film and Moving Image. The successful post holder will undertake teaching and research at all levels as required, primarily in fiction, hybrid filmmaking and screenwriting. We are looking for someone with a strong interest in emerging film technologies and a sustainable approach to filmmaking practice. You will be able to evidence a strong body of professional film industry work.

You will be a motivated practitioner with a passion for teaching, educated to PhD level (or professional equivalent) in a Film and TV related subject. You will have an in-depth knowledge of a variety of approaches to creative and contemporary filmmaking with a particular focus on fiction and screenwriting.

The work will involve preparing, scheduling and delivering courses, including lectures, workshops, seminars, tutorials, supporting course administration and the setting and assessing of assignments. You will also be expected to demonstrate research practice of a high international standard which will contribute to the research culture and knowledge exchange activities within the school. You will also develop your own portfolio of research by practice, exhibitions and grants.

The post holder will also contribute to leadership, management, citizenship and administrative duties across teaching and research activities, commensurate with the role. In particular, the post-holder will participate actively in the succession of Programme Director roles and will be prepared to adopt the position of Programme Director of the BA (Hons) Film and Television when the current PDs demit their position.

Your skills and attributes for success

  • You will be educated to PhD level in film practice and/or possess commensurate Master’s qualifications and relevant industry experience and the proven ability to supervise PhD students.
  • You will have an in-depth knowledge of a variety of approaches to creative and contemporary filmmaking with a focus on fiction, hybrid filmmaking and screenwriting.
  • You will have a strong interest in emerging film technologies and sustainable film practice.
  • You will be able to evidence industry level, practical filmmaking work of international visibility and standard.
  • You will be able to evidence a pre-existing track record of research with practical outputs, written outputs, or both
  • You will be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience of filmmaking practice, managing courses and assessments within a Higher Education context.
  • You will be able to demonstrate experience of project management and administration.
