Job Description

We are looking for a talented and highly driven Research Assistant with a strong interest in virology and biomedical science. This is an excellent opportunity for those graduates who wish to further develop their Research knowledge and skills within a laboratory environment based at the Peter Medawar Building in Oxford.
The post holder will work in the laboratory of Dr Azim Ansari, supporting Sir Henry Dale Fellowship. This new post will involve helping and establishing NGS protocols for virus whole genome sequencing using both long and short read sequencing technologies. You will perform laboratory work, including the processing of blood samples arriving from hospital clinics and nucleic acid extraction using established laboratory protocols, Sanger sequencing and library preparation for next generation sequencing (NGS). In addition, you will also be required to help manage and maintain a research database, and to log clinical samples as they arrive in the lab as well as being responsible for organising shipping of samples between our research sites and liaising with collaborators. You will also have the chance to use ELISA to measure viral biomarkers and perform qPCR to measure viral load.
This role also allows the chance for growth as the project develops. This will enable opportunities for the post-holder that include intellectual involvement in data analysis and presentation, developing and optimising laboratory methods, work with PhD students and supporting the administration required to manage international collaborations.
You will be educated to MSc level in a relevant discipline, or BSc level with substantial relevant experience. This, together with some relevant experience in laboratory practice in areas such as handling blood samples, nucleic acid extraction methods, nucleic acid sequencing techniques, ELISA and PCR are essential for this role.
You will have the ability to develop and improve molecular assays and have strong IT skills that enable you to use analytic tools/software for the management of databases. It is essential that you demonstrate that you have the ability to work independently but also are able to contribute as part of a team. Knowledge of phylogenetics analysis and population genetics of pathogens is desirable.
The post is full-time (part-time and flexible working could be considered) and fixed term until 30/04/2025 with the possibility to extend.
Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. You will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application.
Only applications received before 12:00 midday on 5th May 2023 will be considered.
