Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a Physician Associate Band 7 (Preceptorship for new PAs contracted to work in Primary Care) to join our team at the East Lindsey Primary Care Network (PCN). Covering practices in the Lincolnshire area.
The Physician Associate (PA) main responsibility will be to provide medical care for the presenting patient from initial history taking and clinical assessment through to the diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of care, as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team.
Main duties of the job
The Physician Associate will work collaboratively with the rest of the team to meet the needs of the patients, supporting the delivery of policy and procedures. The PA will provide a holistic and clinical service, with support from GPs as required, implementing agreed management plans, following approved protocols as appropriate. The PA will be expected on a typical day to carry out some home visits and consult with patients who present on the day and via booked appointments.
They will also review and act appropriately on blood results and referrals/ correspondence, regarding their patients. Working with a dedicated supervisor, the post holder will work independently with appropriate support. The level and type of mentorship and supervision will be dependent on the post holder’s skills and knowledge and determined by the organisations Clinical Governance arrangements.
Job Description
- · Undertake face to face, telephone and online consultations for emergency or routine problems, as determined by the Practice, including management of patients with long-term conditions.
- · Participate in all treatment and preventative healthcare services in the Practice as delegated and agreed by the supervising GPs.
- · Perform diagnostic physical examinations and treatment.
- · Identify, signpost, or refer patients at risk of developing long-term conditions, preventing adverse effects on the patient's health.
- · Organise onward investigation, treatment, and referral where appropriate.
- · Ensure continuity of care, arranging follow-up consultations or reviews as necessary
- · Attend regular practice clinical meetings
- · Support the clinical team with all safeguarding matters, in accordance with local and National policies.
- · Under supervision of the GPs in the practice, make professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation.
- · Record clear and contemporaneous IT base consultation notes to an agreed standard.
- · Review and act on laboratory results and clinical communication from Hospitals and other providers.
- · Deliver integrated patient-centred care through appropriate working with the wider primary care multi-disciplinary team and social care network.
- · Under the supervision of a GP conduct appropriate home visits and Care Home visits if required. Training will be provided if there is no previous experience in this area of work.
- · Act on alerts ad reminders (e.g. QOF, local enhanced services etc) during a consultation.
- · Assist the practice in achieving its clinical targets and objectives in QOF, local enhance services and IIF.
- · Recognise, assess and refer where appropriate patients presenting with mental health problems.
- · Participate in continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities and keep up to date with evidence-based knowledge and competence in all aspects of your role, meeting clinical governance guidelines for CPD.
- · Demonstrates use of appropriate communication to gain the co-operation of relevant stakeholders (including patients, senior and peer colleagues and other professionals, other NHS / Private Organisations).
- · Contributes to Primary Care team meetings, following up on agreed actions.
- · Team player/ ability to liaise effectively with colleagues and other members of the team.

- · IT Literate/ proficient use of computer
- · Demonstrates understanding of the Physician Associates' role in governance and is able to implement this appropriately within the workplace.

- · Demonstrates ability to motivate self to achieve goals.
To be considered for this exciting role you must have
- Advanced clinical practice skills
- Clinical examination skills
- Management of patients with common acute medical conditions
- Management of patients with long term conditions
- Knowledge of NHS Understanding of the current issues and challenges facing primary care
- If UK Trained: Degree at 2:1 level or above or Postgraduate Diploma/Master in Physician Associate (formally Physician Assistant) from an accredited UK University. OR
- If US Trained: Current and valid certification with the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA) AND: Registration with the UK Managed Voluntary Registry for Physician Associates as soon as it is in place.
- Member of Faculty of Physician Associates at the RCP, which includes registration on the UK Physician Associate Register (The Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Register (PAMVR)) until such time that the statutory regulation of PAs is achieved.
