Job Description

Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust are seeking to recruit a Senior Ophthalmic Technician/Photographer to join their Staff Bank.

The Senior Ophthalmic Technician will provide technical support to the Ophthalmic Services in the Royal Eye Unit Outpatient Department in particular supporting the Nurse practitioners to deliver services for medical Retinal clinics. They will be responsible for the professional development of the ophthalmic technicians and Nursing assistants within the team. Kingston Hospital offer comprehensive outpatient services at The Royal Eye Unit, a purpose-built facility with state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment equipment. The unit also provides eye surgery, including cataracts and laser treatments.

Important Requirements:

  • BTEC/NVQ Level 3 in Health Science / computer science or equivalent experience
  • Maths and English GCSE or equivalent
  • At least 3 years’ experience as a band 4 Ophthalmic Technician
  • Ophthalmic photographic clinical skills
  • Ability to work independently and show initiative
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Committed to effective delivery and development of services
  • Basic knowledge of ocular anatomy and eye diseases
  • Familiarity with computing techniques, image manipulation and database management

Main Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Provide assessment and recording of visual acuity.
  • Instillation of eye drops as directed by clinical staff.
  • Provide scan images in line with agreed protocols and standard operating procedures.
  • Capture electronic images of ocular structures to include as appropriate: Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT), Biometry, Fields, Corneal thickness, Fluorescein Angiogram (FFA )/ Indocyanine green (ICG), Fundus photography and OCT optic discs (Glaucoma diagnostics) in support of wider ophthalmology service developments.
  • Archiving images/extracting images from OCT and FFA/ICG for teaching purposes and research papers.
  • Setting up of the unit, including the switching on equipment, reporting any technical problems, as appropriate prior to commencement of clinical activity.
  • Explain the image capture procedure to the patient; communicating in an appropriate manner and communicate with patients, relatives and the multi-professional team.
  • Pass on relevant information in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Provide accurate written accounts of care under minimal supervision.
  • Ensure the maintenance of appropriate documentation and records for the department and for individual work.
