Overview

Redemption Roasters is working in collaboration with the Inclusion and Involvement (“I & I”) Team from Offender Personality Disorder Pathway (“OPD”) and the Quakers to support the launch of a coffee cart pilot project in the grounds of Friend’s House, Euston.

The OPD is a multi-agency pathway bringing together psychologically informed support from the NHS and supervision from the Probation Service for individuals released from prison who demonstrate characteristics associated with personality disorders. Through therapeutic support and supervision the pathway aims to help individuals with lived experience and complex needs live crime free lives and reintegrate back into society.


Currently the I&I team work in partnership with the Quakers to run a programme called “Bake the Difference”. Participants learn how to make a variety of baked goods which are then sold in the Quaker-run cafe at Friend’s House.

The coffee cart pilot project would be an extension of the “Bake the Difference” programme and would see participants complete barista training with Redemption Roasters before transitioning to paid employment on a Quaker-owned coffee cart in the grounds of Friend’s House.

The cart will operate from 10:00 - 14:30 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for a period of 5 months, from early May to early October. The cart will be staffed by 2 OPD participants each day and will allow them to get experience of serving paying customers in a relaxed and low-pressure environment.


Responsibilities


We are looking to hire an experienced barista, with supervisory experience, to supervise the day-to-day operations of the coffee cart. Responsibilities will include:


  • Assisting with setting up and closing down the coffee cart each morning and afternoon,

  • Supervising the OPD participants as they serve coffee and take payments,

  • Assisting with service when required

  • Troubleshooting any coffee-related issues that may arise

  • Ensuring that coffee served is to a high standard

  • Providing encouragement and support to the OPD participants in developing soft skills and customer service

  • Monitoring stock levels and liaising with the Quaker team to organise stock orders

  • Communicate with people face to face in a customer service environment

  • Customer focused Demonstrable ability to work as a team player

  • Demonstrable ability to work unsupervised under own initiative

  • Share knowledge and information

  • Understand other’s perspectives

  • Proactively seek feedback to improve ways of working

  • Get to know colleagues to understand their viewpoints and how they like to work

Professionals from the I&I team will be onsite at Friend’s House to provide therapeutic support to the OPD participants.

The successful candidate will also benefit from safeguarding and empathy training provided by Redemption Roasters and partnership training provided by the I&I team at the OPD Pathway.


Requirements


Essential:

  • 1+ years experience as a barista

  • 6 months+ supervisory experience within a busy hospitality setting

  • A desire to work with individuals with lived experience of the criminal justice system

  • A non-judgmental approach to individuals with lived experience of the criminal justice system


Desirable:

  • Experience of working with individuals with complex needs

  • Experience working in a mobile coffee cart setting

  • Knowledge of SOP’s/MQS and quality standard systems

  • EPoS operation Health & safety

  • Certificate Food Hygiene Level 1 or above


Further points to note:


This is a fixed term contract for the duration of the pilot project: 5 months’


The rate of pay will be the London Living Wage: £11.95 per hour


Hours of work will be 09:30 - 15:00 (to allow for set up and closing down)
