Intrigued to know a bit more?
Who better to tell you than Jane and Eleanor*. We asked them what they want from their new support worker. Here's what they had to say.
Things that are important to us about our Support Workers :-
-
Talk to me/ treat me like an adult
-
Support me to do things, not do them for me…..even if it takes a long time
-
To listen to us and not ‘tell’ us.
-
They need to know when to stop talking……when I become anxious
Support me to ;-
-
Make a good cup of coffee
-
Look at Facebook, and know how to log me onto zoom.
-
Go out when we want and stay in when we want to.
-
Go to the pub…….might not be your choice of pub.
Things you need to know about us:-
-
We both like to tell jokes, I need staff that are fun and are not easily offended if I swear or call them names.
-
I sometimes want to eat all the food in my cupboards and other days I do not want to eat at all. My staff need to understand my anxiety around food.
-
I do not like loud noises that startle me when I am not expecting them……this makes me anxious…….but sometimes I can be very loud, but that's ok with me.
-
I can sometimes need a lot of positive encouragement to get out of bed.
-
We both like animals.
-
We like to clean our homes when supported in a positive way.
-
I do not chose to shower or change my clothes every day……but I am getting much better at doing this with lots of positive support.
-
Things we quite like when we do choose to go out are…..shopping, bingo, disco’s, walking, family visiting, gardening and watching the plants grow.
We are hoping new staff might have new ideas on things we might like to do…
As you've probably worked out Jane and Eleanor are full of life and fun to be with, could you support them to lead lives that make sense to them?
