Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the team in the Nutristasis Laboratory as a Biomedical Laboratory Scientist, based at St. Thomas’ Hospital. This is a two year fixed term contract.

The successful candidate would be expected to hold HCPC Registration and will need to have a degree of technical and scientific skills, in order to perform, develop and troubleshoot specialist assays.

The successful applicant would join a team of clinical, scientific and support staff dedicated to providing an excellent service for our customers. Our current work patterns are 37.5 hours/week Monday – Friday.

The Biomedical Scientist role within the Nutristasis lab, will be expected to perform a range of clinical and technical procedures; accountable for their own actions and for staff that they supervise. They are usually regulated practitioners in first jobs prior to specialisation or taking on more senior responsibilities. They will have a relevant vocational degree (i.e. BSc Hons Biomedical Science or Chemistry including HCPC registration) with experience of authorisation of results.

The Nutristasis unit is internationally recognized for some of its services related to the assessment of vitamin status. Scientists working in this unit regularly present at international and national meetings. The laboratory is continuously developing new methodologies aimed to expand the services provided, as well as to improve the existing methodologies. The unit is equipped with state of the art UPC²-MS, LC-MS equipment, HPLC’s and Abbott Architects.The department has an ISO15189 accreditation and is registered as an IBMS training laboratory, where CPD is supported and actively encouraged.

The Nutristasis Department currently have a total monthly activity of approx. 40000 samples, provided at the St Thomas’ site.The department currently operates Monday – Friday during core hours.

The service is delivered by a dynamic team of Clinical Scientists, Biomedical Scientists and support staff spread across the laboratories. Your development and learning

You will have a suite of learning opportunities available through The Synnovis Way Development programme, the Scientific Learning and Development Fund and the Synnovis Academy through which you can receive funding / support for advanced qualifications.

Through our Innovation Accelerator Fund, you can apply for finance to get that new innovative scientific project off the ground, and participate with the wider scientific community through symposiums, conferences and other peer group meetings.

The Biomedical Scientist has responsibility of performing a range of protocol driven tasks within a laboratory area.

They will be expected to perform Nutristasis Assays with in-depth knowledge of their scientific principles. The post holder will also participate in transfer of this knowledge to junior staff.

Work within the scope of practice and code of conduct and maintain the required standard of proficiency.

Ensure quality control measures are carried out to monitor analytical performance, take corrective action where applicable and report any failures to a senior member of staff.

To use information systems, specialist and general software, in data entry and the collection and interpretation of information to assist in the provision of laboratory
