Cod Steaks is a multi-disciplinary design and construction company specialising in bespoke 3D solutions for retail & leisure, museum & heritage, public art, film & TV, PR & marketing. We’ve produced everything from intricate miniature models for Aardman Animations feature films through to large scale themed interiors for the Harry Potter Flagship Store, New York. From humble beginnings, Cod Steaks has become the foremost Creation Agency in the UK, leading the way in championing fabulous design within the built environment.
We are recognised for our distinctive creative approach and exceptional aptitude for immersive visitor experience. Our work can be seen in Exhibitions, Brand Centres, Retail, Attraction Centres, Science Centres, Animation, Film, Museums, Aquariums, Zoos and Art installations worldwide.
We operate from our own fully equipped workshop in Bristol, which is bustling with activity. With several in house manufacturing departments (including design, model-making, sculpting, carpentry, metalwork, spray and artwork finishes) we have the creative talent to tackle almost any project large or small.

We maintain a professional and supportive working environment, where everyone is expected to pitch in to deliver outstanding results. With a full order book ahead, we are currently looking for experienced Freelance Technical Designers to support our busy production schedule.
Suitable candidates will have a proven track record in construction design with a sound knowledge of materials and processes. Working alongside our Project Management and Fabrication teams, you will take conceptual designs through to detailed manufacturing drawings.
Skills & Competencies:
- Design or Engineering degree or equivalent qualification, and/or proven body of experience demonstrated through CV and portfolio
- Knowledge of construction processes and experience of working alongside a workshop team
- Aesthetic sensibility and creative flair
- Experience and/or a keen interest and aptitude for exhibition/attraction/experiential/theatre design, model making and public art
- Proactive flexible ‘can-do attitude’ with demonstrable transferable design skills and a practical hands on approach
- Ability to work with minimal supervision, interacting with various stakeholders including in-house depts, clients and external suppliers
- Relevant knowledge and experience e.g. cabinet making, CNC timber panels, laser cutting, upholstery/textiles, metal fabrication/machining, GRP, PU casting, 3D printing, painting/finishing techniques
- Technical ability to investigate new fabrication processes
- Awareness of mechanical design principles, design for manufacture and assembly
- Awareness of electrical/electronic components, systems and control (e.g. lighting, AV, motion)
- Proficient in 2D and 3D cad (e.g Solidworks, Rhino, Autocad or equivalent)
- Must be familiar with MS Office & Sharepoint
- Skills in Adobe CS, Corel or other graphics package would be a bonus
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpreting concept designs/sketches provided by client, breaking elements down to produce fully resolved designs
- Providing 2D technical drawings & 3D cad models to both our in house construction team and outsourced contractors
- Producing designs compliant with both health and safety and CDM regulations
- Collaborating closely with the in house build team to produce designs which work within the parameters of project budget, timescales and aesthetics
- Preparing presentations for client approval and supporting manufacture & installation literature as required
- Interacting with various stakeholders including in-house depts, clients and external suppliers
- Undertaking site surveys and attending site installations (in both UK and abroad) where required
- Liaising closely with structural engineers and other specialist contractors as necessary
- Sourcing relevant parts, components, specialist materials and researching new processes
- Providing full list of component parts/materials and machine ready cutting files
- Maintaining drawings system on file and updating when required
- Assisting with quotations, providing estimates for design time & materials
- Producing project bill of quantities for costing/ordering
- Driving innovative and cost effective solutions into the design
- Attending internal and external project meetings
- Assisting Project Management with progress/monthly valuations related to design
Contract Details:
- Rate - negotiable (based on skills & experience)
- Contract type - Freelance, full-time (40 hrs per week). Permanent position considered for candidates of the right calibre.
