Job Description
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Band 5 Registered Nurse to join the multidisciplinary team in the Radiotherapy department at the South West Wales Cancer Centre, Singleton Hospital, Swansea.
We are looking for individuals with good clinical interpersonal and communication skills, who are willing and able to adapt to change and to work individually within their level of competence.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- the assessment of care needs, the development of care plans, the implementation and evaluation of these care plans.
- carrying out all relevant forms of care without direct supervision and may be required to demonstrate procedures to and supervise qualified/unqualified staff.
- taking charge of the radiotherapy out patient clinic.
- developing professional/working relationships with colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
- To provide and receive routine information which requires tact or persuasive skills and develop a rapport with patients, relatives and carers.
- demonstrating an understanding of the Health Board Values in providing a quality service.
- supervision of junior staff and be able to teach qualified and unqualified staff.
The post holder will be required to work as part of the Radiotherapy outpatient team . The Radiotherapy department offers a dynamic and challenging work environment. Working as part of a team, the role requires a flexible approach to work, commitment, the ability to prioritise your workload as well as the ability to communicate and work with the wider multidisciplinary team.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Undertaking comprehensive nursing assessments of patients within sphere of responsibility.
- the delivery of patient care to meet the needs of the patients without direct supervision.
- promoting patient safety and comfort by ensuring adherence to correct standards for optimal hospital acquired infection control, hand hygiene, hospital cleanliness, skin Integrity, nutrition and hydration, privacy and dignity and fundamentals of care.
- ensuring the care and control of medication and controlled drugs used for patient care, being aware of the systems for safe administration, ordering and maintenance of stock.

- responsible for ensuring a consistent high standard of individualised patient care is provided and maintained
- responsible for the assessment, monitoring and evaluation of patients attending the South Wales Cancer Centre ensuring that all nursing practice is evidence based.
- provide emotional support for the newly diagnosed cancer patient, and for their families/friends who are attending the South West Wales Cancer Centre.
- communicate, using a range of methods, using a caring, sensitive and empathetic manner to patients and relatives/ carers ensuring relevant health board policy is adhered to.
- provide appropriate verbal and written support to patients and their families along with accurate professional advice about radiotherapy treatment and the radiotherapy planning process and treatment side effects.
- provide patients with written information about chemotherapy treatment, biological therapies and palliative care.
- provide information to patients and their families about national support networks such as Macmillan and local support networks such as Maggies and CISS
- work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team such as the doctors, radiographers, medical physicists and clinical specialist nurses within the department and cascade relevant information to them about the patient as necessary.
- assist doctors and radiographers in the clinics and chaperone all patients during times of physical examination. Strict confidentiality will be maintained at all times.
- communicate complex treatment details to therapy radiographers and chemotherapy nursing staff regarding changes made to treatment schedules in clinic.
- assist medical staff with clinical procedures
- demonstrate politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in dealing with patients, relatives and colleagues, maintaining good customer relations.
- communicate with other members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure that effective high quality care is given to achieve goals. This will involve liaising with other departments and hospitals associated with the oncology patients pathway such as the Chemotherapy Day Unit, Ward 12 and the Oncology Research Department
- use highly developed interpersonal skills to communicate sensitive information to patients and their relatives in a variety of settings.
- provide specialist advice when consulted by staff from other clinical areas.
- recognise and implements the principles of managing and diffusing aggressive behaviour.
- gain an understanding of complex combined schedules of radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments and will co ordinate and liaise this information directly to patients under the supervision of the Senior Nurse.
- gain an understanding of chemotherapy treatments and will be involved with the pre assessment of patients prior to having oral chemotherapy medication
