An excellent opportunity has arisen for a self-motivated and experienced surgical nurse to join the friendly and well-established team on Osterley 2.
We are looking to recruit someone who will role model high clinical and professional standards, who is enthusiastic, kind and able to provide safe and compassionate nursing care to acutely unwell patients. You will be supported with a period of induction and encouraged to pursue your interests through further training and development opportunities at the Trust.
If you are an accomplished nurse in your field keen to share the expertise you have gained in an acute surgical setting, this post offers an excellent opportunity to further develop your clinical skills and contribute to the management of the unit with the support of the Senior Sister.
Osterley 2 is a 30-bed Emergency & General Surgical ward at West Middlesex University Hospital site. Alongside general surgical patients, we also receive emergency admissions under the care of the Plastic Surgery, General Surgery and Urology teams.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellent clinical care and a desire to continually improve standards for patients. You will be expected to work closely with the Senior Sister on quality improvement projects to facilitate positive changes in the way we work, and to share your clinical expertise in order to develop the skills of the wider team through practice development, education, mentorship and preceptorship.
You will be required to manage a team of nurses and healthcare assistants, closely monitoring the progression of their clinical skills and encouraging their professional development. On a day-to-day basis you will be relied upon to assume direct responsibility for the smooth running of the ward and the provision of a high-quality service to patients, co-ordinating care and prioritising the workload of the team. The successful applicant must have excellent verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills, and be approachable and supportive in order to work effectively as part of the team.

1. Communications and Relationship skills
- Act as a role model and assist in effective staff supervision with clinical practice, working with staff and patients in an advisory, teaching and support capacity and maintaining professional competence, authority and credibility.
- Work collaboratively with clinical nursing and medical experts including Lead Nurses, Clinical Teams, Consultants, Nurse Specialists and Practice Development Nurses in the development of expert, person centred care.
- Develop, motivate and lead a team by using objectives in line with department, sub specialty and corporate goals in conjunction with the ward sister and in their absence.
- Provide professional leadership with the ward sister within the department ensuring that all staff use evidence based practice and adhere to the NMC code of professional conduct.
- Be able to demonstrate a high degree of motivation and innovation.
- Communicate effectively with the department nursing team participating and helping to arrange monthly team meetings and ensure robust systems exist so that staff feel informed.
- To contribute positively to the effectiveness and efficiency of the teams in which he/she works.
- Work with PALS and the complaints department with the ward sister/manager to ensure that areas of concern are addressed effectively and in a timely manner, providing a response as required.
- Be able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team environment ensuring most effective use of all members of those professional teams.
- Display strong leadership and positivity to the department team during times of increased pressure on resources, staffing crises, or bed pressures, working with divisional leads to assess risks across the division and how these can be minimised.

1. Planning and Organisational skills
- Assist with the monitoring of key performance indicators, helping to identify trends and take action to maintain levels of acceptable performance.
- Support the ward sister in ensuring that patient activity is monitored and that all patient information is entered into the IT system.
- Assist with ensuring the department objectives are set in line with the Divisional and Trust objectives.
- Assist with leading the Ward Accreditation and Patient First initiatives, ensuring this is implemented on the ward and has a high profile.
1. Patient and Family Care
- Act as an expert practitioner demonstrating specialist knowledge, skills and expertise within the area of work and within the context of changing health care provision, including end of life care.
- Assist the ward sister in developing/implementing evidence based practice within the clinical environment with a multi-professional focus having the ability to facilitate, initiate, manage and evaluate change in practice to improve quality of care.
- Work alongside the ward sister to ensure that the quality of patient care is assured by involvement in audits and implementation of any change needed as a result of findings.
- Assist with ensuring high levels of patient satisfaction, ensure patient questionnaires are monitored and any required actions implemented
- Help to ensure the needs of older people and their carers are kept central to practice and service development.
- Ensure privacy and dignity of patients and clients is key in provision of nursing care and clinical practise of all staff
- Work with MDT and discharge team to facilitate effective, timely discharge, including complex discharge planning.
- Work in conjunction with ward sister and dementia team to ensure dementia care is tailored individually in line with current dementia practice.
1. Policy and Service Development Implementation
- Ensure that in the absence of the ward sister any safeguarding issues are raised appropriately to lead nurses to enable investigation in relation to vulnerable adults or children.
- Ensure that requirements for Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty assessments are adhered to.
- Assist with ensuring equipment is regularly maintained and serviced in line with hospital policy and manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Assist with ensuring the medical devices folder for all equipment on the ward is kept updated with any new equipment and training records are up to date
- Report / action any accidents, incidents or undue occurrences reported to you or witnessed by you in line with Trust policy using the Datix system.
- Ensure proactive investigation of any clinical incidents, undertaking root cause analysis if indicated, ensuring action plans are developed as needed, in the absence of and in conjunction with the ward sister.
- To assist in the risk management and health and safety in the workplace, by being proactive in raising risks with divisional management team and ensuring adequate controls are in place to manage these risks.
- Work in collaboration with clinical leads in relation to national initiatives such as the Care Quality Commission standards and NICE guidelines.
- Contribute to the process of risk management within the Divisions particularly with regard to issues related to nursing and other professional matters.
- To contribute to a healthy and safe working environment by adhering to health and safety regulations and Trust policies.
1. Financial and Physical Development
- Assist in the management of the department budget under the guidance of the ward sister. Help to ensure that pay and non-pay costs are examined monthly and examine ways to bring budget in line, or raise cost pressures with the ward sister.
- Work in conjunction with the ward sister to ensure the principles of lean working/ productive ward are embedded into the department culture and reflected in practice, to ensure most appropriate use of resources both staff and consumables and raise standards of care.
1. Human Resources (inc. developing and delivering training)
- Assist the ward sister in ensuring all staff are working to their required level of clinical and professional competence, developing all staff to attain competence as highlighted at appraisal.
- To participate with the ward sister in ensuring appraisals are undertaken for all team members on an annual basis ensuring feedback on performance is given at regular intervals throughout the year. Recommend the needs for staff development and training where identified by this process, ensuring training needs analysis is provided for the department.
- To assist with the induction for new staff members which meet with legal requirements such as Health & Safety, Drugs etc. and set standards.
- Support newly qualified nurses during their preceptorship period.
- Assist in the preparation of and evaluation of staffing rosters; adjust accordingly to provide cover with the required skill mix making best use of resources available. Minimise the use for bank and agency staff by relocation of staff as needed to cover rota effectively.
- Work with the ward sister in appointing staff to your area in line with recruitment policy and budget allocation.
- Assist with the assessment of current and future manpower needs including a continual review of skill mix in conjunction with the other divisional ward/ department sisters / charge nurses, Matrons and Heads of Nursing.
- To promote the principles of Improving Working Lives amongst your team ensuring fairness and equity.
- Ensure staff sickness is managed proactively within Trust policy in the absence of the ward manager.
- To fully participate in the Trust’s appraisal system review and personal development planning process on an annual basis.
1. Information Resources
- Assist in the management of IT systems required to ensure patient safety and data collection, including Patient Track.
- Help to collect data and key performance indicators. Ensure these are displayed and communicated to staff.
1. Research and Development
- Support a quality teaching and learning environment.
- Actively assist in the audit of and proactive management of essential care against complaints, improvements, critical incidents and the essence of care benchmarking.
- Teach and facilitate learning for all nursing students in liaison with the University, and for health care assistants undertaking NVQ training.
1. Professional
- Undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the post and as agreed with line manager as part of the personal development planning process.
- To achieve and demonstrate agreed standards of personal and professional development within agreed timescales.
- To undertake any other duties at the request of the line manager which are commensurate with the role, including project work, internal job rotation and absence cover.
1. Clinical
- Assist the ward sister to ensure that the clinical environments reflect a high standard of cleanliness, be proactive in response to any issues raised in cleaning audits or patient environment inspections.
- Ensure the control and custody of all medications and drugs in accordance with Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Trusts policy and statutory regulations, in the absence of and in conjunction with the ward sister.
- Work with the Infection Control team and the facilities team to ensure that infection control procedures and cleanliness are observed.
- Work with infection control to ensure that MSRA screening is undertaken as per policy and decolonisation is commenced when required and in a timely manner.
- Ensure that the infection control isolation policy is adhered to.
- Assist the ward sister to ensure that Infection control audits such as high impact interventions and hand hygiene audits are undertaken as required, and any issues or trends in poor compliance are addressed
