Behind the scenes, the House of Commons Service is made up of more than 3,000 employees who support and facilitate the smooth day to day running of the House. They provide professional services to Members of Parliament, their staff, and the wider parliamentary community.

The Chamber and Participation Team (CPT) brings together all the disciplines that support the House of Commons Chamber within one coherent structure – the procedural offices that facilitate the core function of legislating, the operational teams who focus on ensuring that the Chamber runs effectively and efficiently, and the public-facing teams who promote Parliament’s role and seek to engage citizens across the UK with parliamentary business.

We deliver face-to-face and online educational programmes and learning resources for schools, teachers, home educators and school-age children across the UK. We also manage engagement activities and campaigns that target the broader UK population, prioritising people and communities who are less engaged with Parliament and Members’ work.

Job description

The Deputy Head of Education and Engagement ensures the smooth running of the established and ambitious education and engagement service which reaches hundreds of thousands of people every year.

The Deputy Head of Education and Engagement role is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Education and Engagement team including the operational management of the annual budget and KPIs alongside supporting the Head of Education and Engagement with strategic development. The postholder will work collaboratively with colleagues across Participation and the wider House and deputise for the Head of Education and Engagement as required.

Person specification

The successful candidate will have the following skills/experience:

  • Experience of leading and managing a high performing public engagement or educational team with the ability to motivate and lead others and make clear, timely and well-evidenced decisions. Proven ability to take the initiative, bring forward new ideas and come up with innovative solutions to problems, taking into account business context and constraints.
  • Experience of using strong analytical skills to meaningfully analyse and interpret relevant data and other information to inform decision-making and monitor progress; the ability to proactively manage budgets and KPI data to undertake financial analysis, reporting and forecasting procedures
  • An understanding of how strategic objectives can be translated into operational delivery with the ability to lead on the short- and long-term business planning cycle for Education and Engagement.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop strong, positive relationships and build credibility quickly; experience of successfully working with a range of internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • The understanding of how to successfully create a culture of diversity and inclusion across a busy, deadline-focused team.
