Why this role is important for CPI’s work
CPI has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Data Scientist to join the Information Technology Operational & Scientific team. The team supports Engineers and Scientists at CPI to extract the highest possible impact from the experiments they perform and the data they collect, in areas involving operational (industrial) and scientific (experimental) data that are generated by CPI’s technical teams.
In the role of Data Scientist, you will support CPI by solving complex problems and improving its operations. It is a unique opportunity to apply data science principles to technologies and innovations that will aid the world in the drive to sustainability and net zero. Tasks in the role will include but are not limited to developing data-driven models to identify patterns and trends in data, creating visualizations to help others understand complex data sets, and using machine learning algorithms to make predictions about future events. You will guide and shape CPI’s growth as an organisation as we recruit an increasing number of data scientists, software developers, and computer scientists to ensure we have the correct balance of skills to deliver the organisation’s strategy.
Internally this role is referred to as Principal Scientist – Digital Data and Analytics, shown in title on the job description.
Key activities in the role of Data Scientist will include but are not limited to:
Developing and implementing algorithms and statistical models to analyse and interpret complex data sets.
Extracting valuable insights and knowledge from data using advanced analytics and data mining techniques.
Collaborating with cross-functional teams to identify business problems and opportunities that can be addressed through data analysis.
Designing and conducting experiments to test hypotheses and validate assumptions about data.
Communicating findings and recommendations to stakeholders clearly and compellingly.
Developing and maintaining data pipelines, databases, and other infrastructure needed for data analysis and reporting.
Staying up to date with the latest trends and techniques in data science and applying them to improve the company’s products and services.
Mentoring and training other team members on data science methods and technologies.
The person we are seeking
Will be Educated to Degree level (or equivalent) in a Computing related field such as Computer Science, Data Engineering, Data Science, or Software Development.
OR
Will hold significant industrial experience in relevant positions to demonstrate the baseline knowledge acquired in the above-mentioned degree programmes.
It is essential you can demonstrate a track record of being able to write effective code utilising a number of the following programming languages (ideally 2* – *3): Java, C, Python, JavaScript, C#, C++, SQL.
Experience in utilising code repositories such as GitHub (or similar) and using functions to version control and allow branching is essential.
Knowledge and experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, and the ability to create and manage resources within these platforms.
Experience with relational databases for backend design such as PostgreSQL, MonogoDB etc. Has the ability to design and query such relational databases.
Knowledge of CI/CD & DevOps type approaches and experience/familiarity with utilising Docker for the containerised deployment of micro-services.
It is highly desirable that you have:
A basic level of knowledge of network and cybersecurity principles that can inform access permissions for cloud-based assets.
Experience of ASP.NET framework.
The ability to write intermediate-level REST APIs utilising an appropriate web framework.
Experience working on large projects and reporting to a range of stakeholders with differing backgrounds.
Experience writing internal documentation to define best practice and ways of working within software development.
Examples of utilising code for data science, data engineering, or machine learning.
Any experience with data visualisation software or libraries e.g., dashboarding or D3.js etc.

Salary: £45,000.00-£61,000.00 per year
