At L3Harris in Brighton we are part of Release Systems and the Mission Avionics sector operating in the Aerospace domain. We specialise in high performance electro-mechanical systems and pneumatic technology for airborne weapon carriage release.
As a Structural Engineering Placement, your responsibilities will involve performing hand calculations, FEA and CFD in order to support the Design Team in developing new products that are safe for flight. You will learn how to use hand calculations, FEA and CFD in real-world scenarios, and have a chance to get involved in Stress and Vibration testing to see how those calculations play out in reality.
You will also have the opportunity to assist the design team in developing strong but lightweight components by using structural optimisation techniques.
We also have a dedicated test facility and machine shop on site, so you’ll get to see components that you were involved with being made and tested as well as getting involved with the tests themselves.
This role provides fantastic opportunities to develop skills in technical and professional areas, gain an understanding of working environments and valuable experience whilst making a difference.
What you can expect
- Develop your hand calculation skills in a practical environment using Mathcad and Excel
- Develop your FEA & CFD modelling skills using Ansys
- Learn how to use Solidworks CAD modelling software
- Learn how to write documentation suitable for flight safety certification
- Develop practical tests to verify the accuracy of your hand calculations and FEA
- Get involved with the product development process and see your designs come to life
What you’ll bring
- A minimum of 3 A-Levels (or equivalent qualification) with grades of C or above (including Maths)
- Pursuing a degree in a relevant subject with a predicted final grade of 2:1 or 1st
- The ability to use Solidworks or a similar CAD package
- Some experience with FEA, CFD or both
- A basic understanding of manufacturing techniques (particularly Machining)
- Some practical mechanical experience
