Job Description

Application Engineer (Library Special Collections)

Salary: Grade 7 (£35,333 – £42,155 p.a. depending on experience)

This role will be based on the university campus, with scope for it to be undertaken in a hybrid manner. We are also open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

Are you looking for a role which will contribute to global change? Are you interested in utilising your experience in supporting a range of education applications in a complex information systems environment? Do you enjoy working in a role that supports and continuously improves critical business systems? Are you interested in developing your career and skills?

The University of Leeds is one of the top 135 universities in the world. We have a truly global community, with more than 39,000 students from 170 different countries and over 9,000 staff of 100 different nationalities. Established in 1904, we have a strong tradition of academic excellence, reflected in first-class student education, along with world-leading research that has a real impact around the globe.

As we embark on an ambitious Digital Transformation, we are investing in our IT Service which is key to developing our learning and research capability as we strive to collaborate across the globe, tackling global issues.

You will be focused on providing support for a diverse range of existing services and applications, including responsibilities for effective incident management. Your main focus will be to deliver a sustainable service which manages the discovery, usability, management and preservation of Special Collections metadata and digital collections. In addition, you will provide support for the Library’s Digital Library repository and for the integration and presentation of digital resources through the Special Collections website.

As well as providing responsive support for these services, you will also lead the managed development of the systems in liaison with Library and IT colleagues. This could include the design and implementation of new tools or the integration of existing tools with new technologies in order to deliver a seamless resource discovery experience for users and the maximum efficiency for Special Collections staff.

You will utilise skills, knowledge and experience gained from your previous roles to provide high quality proactive and reactive application support and development. You will have extensive skills and experience in a scripting language, ideally PHP (though Python or Perl experience would be acceptable), as well as familiarity with LAMP stack development.

Ideally, you will also be familiar with the field of digital asset management and digital scholarship and will have some experience of general data handling using different data schemas and IIIF (the International Image Interoperability Framework standard).

Working in a complex environment, your work will involve ensuring user documentation developed and maintained in line with standard operating procedures to ensure alignment with industry best practice, IT standards and regulatory compliance.
