Job Description

Job Introduction

The BBC is doing more than ever across England; growing its investment and activity throughout the country as we seek to better serve audiences and better reflect their lives.

We are looking for a new publicist to support leading national radio station based in Salford, Radio 5 Live. This is an exciting and varied role covering current affairs and non-sport audio content. Sitting within the BBC England Communications team, it presents the opportunity to work in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary press office telling audiences about our original journalism and high-impact radio – including podcasts from Nicky Campbell’s Different to Deborah Meaden’s Big Green Moneyshow and How We Hustle with Yianni.

The role reports to the Communications Manager for England and 5 Live.

Main Responsibilities

You will lead the publicity campaigns for all non-sport programmes and major moments commissioned and produced by BBC Radio 5 Live working closely with BBC England on the BBC Across the UK narrative.

With passion and enthusiasm for radio, current affairs and the industry this role takes immediate responsibility for finding different ways to generate interest in what we do. This requires an organised and creative comms approach to plan and execute proactive publicity campaigns, identify and manage reputational issues and work closely with talent and production executives. Publicists spot opportunities to maximise coverage across a range of media including print and online press, broadcast, podcasts and social media, and collaborate with internal teams across the BBC to deliver effective campaigns that drive audiences and reaches them wherever they are.

There is a requirement for out of hours working along with some UK travel.

Are you the right candidate?

Are you interested in news and current affairs? Savvy about social media? Able to keep a cool head under pressure?

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate a clear interest in news and current affairs with a track record of creating and delivering successful publicity campaigns.

Your experience should ideally include crafting press releases, pitching feature ideas, working with external journalists, creating social media content, as well as understanding how to write appropriately for different audiences.

You will be working alongside executives, journalists and presenters so you will need to have some experience of stakeholder management and be comfortable briefing people on relevant communication issues. In addition, you should be able to demonstrate experience in managing reputational issues.
