About the role
Embedded within the Vertebrates & Anthropology Curatorial Division, this is a fixed term full-time position of Curator, Calleva Fossil Mammals with an end date of 31 August 2025. The Curator will work closely with Fossil Mammals Curators, Principal Curator in Charge of Fossil Vertebrates & Anthropology and researchers in the Centre for Human Evolution Research (CHER) to support Calleva research projects while ensuring best practice in collections management and care. The post will support the activities of the CHER by assisting with collections access, undertaking due diligence checks, cataloguing and digitisation of collections using spreadsheets and the Collections Management System and performing literature searches as well as supporting public engagement activities where required as part of Calleva research projects. This is an important opportunity to support best practice and to work with Fossil Mammals collections in a world-renowned institution with a unique scientific mission and public profile.
Applications are open to candidates in the field of Palaeontology, or Archaeozoology or Zoology, with expertise in an area relevant to mammalian and/or archaeozoological remains.
About you
Academic Qualifications
A postgraduate qualification (e.g. MSc or PhD) in a subject relevant to the role or equivalent experience (e.g. in Palaeontology, Archaeozoology or Zoology).
Role competencies
· Experience in the field of natural sciences, or closely related discipline
· Experience of working with museum or palaeontological collections
· Knowledge and/or experience of information management systems for collections (e.g. EMu)
· Clear understanding of taxonomic principles and an ability to recognise basic taxonomic terms in relation to loans, enquiries, and curation of collections
· Experience of handling wide range of mammal specimens and specimen preparations
· Good attention to detail in undertaking methodical tasks and competent in the use of relevant IT software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, etc
· Well organised with effective time management skills and an ability to complete multiple tasks within tight deadlines
· Excellent communication and inter-personal skills with the ability to work well both within a team and on own initiative and to communicate with a variety of different stakeholders
