Would you like to help create the innovations that the UK needs to achieve Net Zero and grow the green economy?

The SICE (Science and Innovation for Climate and Energy) team is delivering against the £1Bn Net Zero Innovation Portfolio https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/net-zero-innovation-portfolio as announced in the Prime Minister's ten point plan for a green industrial revolution.

We are looking for up to two Innovation Project Managers to work alongside NZIP Programme Managers developing the next generation of technical innovations. These technologies could include innovations in the areas of energy storage, flexibility, heat pumps and building energy efficiency.

Person specification

Key responsibilities

As our programme cycle progresses, you will be expected to:


  • Take responsibility for delivery of a multi-million pound funding programme. This could include day-to-day work producing tender documents, running competitions, overseeing the process of contracting with successful bidders, resolving issues with project delivery, managing risk, evaluation and project closure.

  • Oversee the work of Monitoring Officers who verify projects are on track, and we understand the progress of deliverables, risks and finances. A science or engineering background will be important for scrutiny.
  • Advise leadership on how to handle requests for project changes, bringing insight on whether requests are technically viable and will still allow our aims to be realised.

  • Develop information dissemination events and activities to ensure that leanings are shared and the impact of the programme on driving net zero is maximised. This will need good writing skills and an ability to explain technical issues to non-experts.
  • Work with other themes/ programmes according to your interests and development priorities, usually some assessment of technically complex funding bids.

  • Work with colleagues in SICE, across HMG and with industry engagement to develop new innovation funding programmes and help ensure a well-coordinated landscape of R&D support.

Skills and experience

We would love to hear from you if you have:

  • A passion for project management and helping projects get meaningful results and are confident with data, quantitative and qualitative project information.

  • Knowledge of engineering or science to equivalent of degree level so you can gauge technical progress and risks of our projects, advise on change control and explain results

  • Ability to engage, influence and work collaboratively with BEIS colleagues and external partners

  • Good organisational skills

  • Some familiarity with energy and climate issues.

The post holder will also need to work flexibly and be prepared to tackle new responsibilities or support other areas of work within the team or across SICE.

To qualify for the Science & Engineering Practitioner Allowance, the post holders will be required to:

  • Possess a valid (and registered if applicable) academic or professional qualification relevant to the role; and
  • Be able to demonstrate 'technical and commercial leadership’ competence (Competence C) to Chartered Engineer standard, from UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) (https://www.engc.org.uk/media/3877/uk-spec-v12-web.pdf) or the equivalent elements of ‘Personal Responsibility’, ‘Interpersonal Skills’ and ‘Professional Practice’ to Chartered Scientist Level from Science Council Professional Registers Competence Framework (https://sciencecouncil.org/web/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Matrix-grid-of-competencies.pdf).

Technical skills

Provide technical and commercial leadership (UK-SPEC) or ‘Personal Responsibility’, ‘Interpersonal Skills’ and ‘Professional Practice’ (Science Council - From UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC): Demonstrates the skills needed to: plan the work and resources needed to enable effective implementation of a significant engineering task or project; manage (organise, direct and control), programme or schedule, budget and resource elements of a significant engineering task or project; lead teams or technical specialisms and assist others to meet changing technical and managerial needs; and, bring about continuous quality improvement and promote best practise.
