Position Purpose & Summary
To operate a complex computer-controlled processing plant & all associated support areas in a controlled safe and environmentally compliant manner to achieve the business requirements and serve the needs of our customers. Performing production activities in the manufacture of alcohol, including trouble shooting and investigation support, material handling, stock records, continuous improvement activities, housekeeping and 5S, plant cleaning & equipment checks, changing enzymes/chemicals, preparing PTW’s and isolations for future maintenance, and taking part in any front-line maintenance that is required, all within a small self-managed team.
Principal Accountabilities
Environment, Health & Safety & Food Safety 10%
- Ensure Cargill standards for health & safety/food safety and environmental issues are maintained.
- Ensure the process is controlled and maintained to remain within all operational safety and design limits.
- Report issue w.r.t safety/ food safety /health and safety
- Participate in observational safety programme
Process Operations 60%
- Operate & supervise the computer control system including manual interventions/tasks, recipe monitoring & minor alterations as required. Report anomalies/deviations to the Ethanol ASI / Shift Manager where necessary.
- Interpretation of data and troubleshooting of unit operation
- Ensure production targets are met including yield, efficiencies and area KPI’s.
- Carry out specified processing & support activities, including stock records, 5Y and RCA investigations.
- To unload/discharge raw materials from bulk tankers ensuring correct documentation, identification & sampling in accordance with work instructions.
- To maintain and improve a high level of housekeeping.
Quality Testing 10%
- Monitor process by regular sampling & laboratory analyses, including GC & HPLC analysis.
- Completing written records detailing information for ISO and Food Safety Standards.
- Prepare samples for organoleptic/analytical analyses.
Maintenance 5%
- Execute autonomous maintenance activities (first line plant maintenance)
- To monitor specific equipment/processes & report identified faults, alarms & technical failures to improve safety & reliability.
Loading & Unloading shipments 10%
- To load/unload alcohol shipments ensuring correct documentation, identification & sampling in accordance with work instructions
Continuous Improvement/Reliability Excellence 5%
- Investigate ways of improving productivity and/or yield whilst maintaining quality, safety & environmental standards.
- Actively participate and support daily and weekly production meetings (IDEX/IWEX).
- Drive and implement continuous improvements across the area.
- Assist in improvement projects within the lean and six sigma models.
Operator Continuity/Other
- Ensure continuity of production by effective handover at shift change.
- Manage operational cover within the team.
Minimum Required Qualifications
- Strong experience in centrally controlled process operation environment using computerized screens to monitor and control a plant
- Proven experience in production
- Excellent understanding of Food Safety and Quality Standards, and Health and Safety
- 5 GCSE’s grade A-C (including English and Maths) or equivalent
- Strong communication skills and ability to coach colleagues
- IT literate
- Proactive attitude, and willingness to be accountable for performance
- Ability to challenge the status quo in a constructive manner
- Awareness of ‘TQM’ principles and ‘TQM’ in practice (Reliability Excellence)
- In process analysis experience
- Front line maintenance experience, preferably proved in a process plant environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Levels 3 in Process Operation
- Knowledge of distillation or fermentation processes would be preferable.
