Applications are invited for a clinical research assistant which is available immediately with the research group led by Professor Kamalan Jeevaratnam in the Comparative Biomedical Sciences Dept, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Surrey. The position is funded by the Horse Racing Betting Levy Board on a project in collaboration with Prof Celia Marr (Rossdales Equine Hospital) and the practice partner network of the University of Surrey.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, organised, proactive and flexible individual to work with the team to undertake activities related to the grant. This include but not limited to:
a. Travel to veterinary practices in various locations throughout the UK and work with clinical/administrative staff to extract data from medical records (in a range of paper and digital formats).
b. Collate medical data, prepare spreadsheets, perform statistical analysis and provide summary reports. Proficient use of computer programmes such as excel and word and willingness to learn how to use more complex statistical and ECG analysis software.
c. Apply ECG equipment to horses, collect and analyse ECG data from equine patients including visiting training yards and working with training yard staff to arrange appointments for these activities
d. Willingness to be based in Newmarket for several months each year but also able to relocate temporarily for several days/weeks to Surrey and a range of veterinary practices across UK.
e. Skills required will include high level of organisational skills, good communications skills and willingness to interact with a large number of people of a wide range of backgrounds (e.g researchers, vets, racehorse trainers and their riding staff and horse carers, nursing staff, veterinary clinic administrative staff)
f. Familiarity with horses, and in particular racehorses, will be highly advantageous.
