Global Sustainability Manager – Land & Biodiversity
GSK has announced new ambitious environmental sustainability goals to have a net zero impact on climate and a net positive impact on nature by 2030 across our entire end to end value chain.
The role of the Global Sustainability Manager – Land & Biodiversity sits within the Group Sustainability Team, reporting to the Senior Director – Environmental Stewardship. This position requires leading and enabling the business to reach its ambitious Nature goals, bringing together internal and external environmental experts to support of GSK’s targets and commitments. You will be accountable for GSK’s global land and biodiversity ambition, supporting the business not only directionally but also identifying both impact reduction and restoration opportunities.
You will work internally with the business units and establish and maintain relationships with external stakeholders to ensure the delivery and scientific validity of our approach to achieving the 2030 targets.
You will ensure that GSK has the appropriate policies, standards, guidance, and resources in place to achieve our targets as well as providing specialist insights and expertise as the subject matter expert to the wider GSK businesses.
There is remote working flexibility in this role, however you would be expected to be UK / Europe based and work at GSK House site periodically.
In this role you will

Lead the global Land and Biodiversity ambition and governance, providing support to the Global Sustainability Leadership Team in strategy development, for GSK’s operational footprint and value chains.

Provide thought leadership, technical and market expertise to develop and track key metrics for internal and external reporting on land and biodiversity, regulation, forecasting and road mapping against GSK’s targets

Conduct materiality assessments on GSK’s impacts and dependencies on land occupation and transformation, in line with external frameworks (ie. SBTN).

Develop science – based glidepaths to reduce GSK’s impact on nature (across entire value chain) and work with the Leadership Team in identifying appropriate nature restoration initiatives.

Represent GSK in key external land and biodiversity forums, organisations and partners.
- Build internal capability across business units and functions on land and biodiversity strategy and strategy deployment.

Manage topic-related projects, consultants, and budgets with a high level of autonomy.

Collaborate internally with Group Sustainability Function and Business Units to enhance performance.

Collaborate externally to identify and champion opportunities in the supply chain and identify cross sector collaboration opportunities.
- Develop and maintain the policy and standards.
- Respond to technical queries and removing technical barriers to delivery, enabling business to achieve and accurately report performance.
- Deep dive on pertinent risks and external developments impacting delivery of targets.

Support the running of the regular subject matter expert forums, training, and communications.

Subject matter expert in land use / biodiversity / natural capital.
- Experience in assessing corporate impacts and dependencies on nature.
- Ability to identify associated risks and opportunities within the private sector

Ability to develop models that facilitate incorporation of land and biodiversity management, protection, and restoration into business strategies and imperatives.

Experience establishing sustainability commitments, targets and KPIs.

Excellent communication skills with the ability to use data to back up assumptions, develop business cases and explain complicated technical matters across different functions and backgrounds.

Strong analytical thinking and problem solving and ability to convert strategy to execution.
- Excellent presentation skills and ability to simplify complex messages to a wide range of audiences.

Experience in navigating complex, matrix organizations, with ability to work and influence cross functionally, up to VP level.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
The following would be a plus:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Environmental Science, Environment Management
-
Knowledge of existing / in development frameworks (SBTN, TNFD, GRI and tools such as Global Forest Watch and IBAT/STAR), being capable of setting up report content to deliver against them.
-
Understanding of regenerative agricultural practices and experience in driving initiatives across supply chains.
-
Knowledge of natural capital accounting.
-
Experience guiding blue-chip companies through sustainability reporting.
-
Experience of strategy and policy development.
-
Strong organizational skills – track record in strategy development and project management in a related field, with a wide range of stakeholders from different backgrounds and geographies.
