Poole Harbour Commissioners (PHC) operate one of the UK’s major trust ports and are responsible for managing Europe’s largest natural harbour (10,000 acres). Although founded in 1895, PHC is very much a 21st century operation with ambition to grow and embrace modern innovations and attitudes. The organisation is an important local and regional economic driver and operates a busy and diverse port estate which handles Ro-Ro ferries, Liner services, Bulk cargo, Project cargo, Cruise Ships, Yacht Transportation Ships and Superyachts along with supporting facilities and infrastructure. PHC also operate two multi award winning marinas alongside an extensive and thriving marine leisure community, balancing the commercial aspects of Poole Harbour within a very sensitive environmental location.

PHC is looking to recruit, early in 2023, a new CEO (Clerk and Collector of Dues) . This is a very exciting time to be leading the organisation. The business has burgeoning ambition linked to a clear strategic vision and purpose, with a well-performing executive team which is supported by a strong and diverse Board.
The Role
The successful candidate will lead and grow the £13m t/o organisation which directly employs approximately 100 employees. Reporting to the Chair and Board, the CEO will drive a positive corporate culture which embodies PHC’s cores values and strives for continuous improvement. Responsible for the organisation’s overall performance and management, the successful applicant will be able to demonstrate a strong strategic leadership record including service delivery and commercial success.
The role involves leading on PHC’s latest Master Plan and developing Poole‘s vision to be the premier UK marine leisure venue, while safeguarding the environment of Europe’s largest natural harbour.
PHC is a key partner in driving the local and regional economies, and the new CEO will need to foster effective working relationship with a number of public and private sector stakeholders.
Safety, both on the port and on the water is a fundamental responsibility and applicants will need to demonstrate a clear understanding of the Port Marine Safety Code as well as UK port health and safety legislation.
The CEO will also set the tone of effective governance and ensure that the organisation discharges it statutory duties.
The Person
The successful candidate will be:
· A dynamic, commercially astute leader who is capable of innovation, creating business and market strategies and developing new revenue streams.
· Experienced in leading and developing high performing teams and successful implementation of change management, organisational improvement and risk strategy would be advantageous.
· Comfortable working with Local and Central Government, relevant trade associations and the extensive network of stakeholder within Poole Harbour will be important.
· Politically sensitivity with an unbiased approach to work.
The successful candidate will likely already be a CEO or have senior management experience in an organisation of similar complexity. They will need to demonstrate the qualities of probity, gravitas and diplomacy and be results driven. Previous senior management experience in the port or shipping sectors, although not essential, would be an advantage.
