Job Description

Company Description

CGG (www.cgg.com) is a global technology and HPC leader that provides data, products, services and solutions in Earth science, data science, sensing and monitoring. Our unique portfolio supports our clients in efficiently and responsibly solving complex digital, energy transition, natural resource, environmental, and infrastructure challenges for a more sustainable future. CGG employs around 3,300 people worldwide and is listed on the Euronext Paris SA (ISIN: 0013181864).

Job Description

This entry-level role is for physicists, mathematicians and geophysicists, looking for a career where they can continue to develop their scientific skills and knowledge.

We provide all training that is required so no prior knowledge of geophysics or geology is expected. New starters will also be buddied with recent graduates to help them settle into the role.

Employees will be based in Crawley, a town just south of London, with excellent transport links to central London, the South Coast, the wider UK, and international destinations via nearby Gatwick Airport.

Start date

There are two graduate intakes planned for 2023 with one in early spring and one in late summer/early autumn which can be discussed during the application process.

Do you want to use physics and mathematics to solve real world problems?

The world beneath our feet is incredibly complex and the source of the natural resources fundamental to the functioning of our society. We utilise the latest signal processing, modelling and imaging techniques and some of the most advanced compute facilities in the world to build high-resolution 3D images & models of subsurface structures and rock properties for our clients.

We operate a team-based structure with each team focusing on one or two client-facing projects with their unique geophysical and commercial challenges. We are looking for individuals who will enjoy using their problem solving skills to meet the challenges our clients have, as well as continuously seek to improve their own understanding and help develop our technology further.

No two projects are the same: from small proprietary projects for a single client focused on a specific subsurface target to huge multi-client projects covering tens of thousands of square kilometres and imaging deep into the Earth.

Data can be acquired at the ocean bottom, on land, down boreholes or at sea and involve novel instrumentation or acquisition arrays. The client objective might be exploring for natural resources, monitoring fluid flow through a producing oil & gas field or identifying future geological storage for carbon capture; and depending where the project is located the geology could throw up challenges for imaging as varied as iceberg scours, volcanic intrusions, gas clouds, prehistoric coral reefs and truly massive salt bodies.

What skills will you develop as a geophysicist?

You can expect to develop expertise in:

  • The fields of signal processing, modelling and imaging; and gain awareness of wider developments in the fields of geoscience and data science
  • Building and maintaining long-term client relationships through service excellence
  • Management of complex technical projects with multiple short- and long-term deadlines
  • Effective communication and collaboration with team members and clients
  • Cultural awareness through training and interaction with our globally diverse clients and teams
  • Later in your career, leadership and management skills enabling you to contribute to the development of others; and opportunities to publish papers and present at industry conferences

Qualifications

Integrated or postgraduate Masters or PhD in any of the following disciplines: Geophysics, Mathematics, Physics, Astrophysics/Astronomy, Earth Sciences and Natural Sciences with a Physics specialisation.

What do we look for?

  • Logical approach to problem solving
  • Technical knowledge in an area of applied mathematics or physics
  • Enthusiastic attitude towards learning and passion for your subject
  • The technical agility to adapt your existing knowledge to a new field
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts
  • Evidence of leadership, teamwork or customer service from involvement in university societies, extracurricular activities, volunteering or work experience/internships.
