Job Details

Under the leadership of Dr Alejandra Bruna, we are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Training Fellow to join the Preclinical Modelling of Paediatric Cancer Evolution team. This role involves the candidate to perform research into cancer evolution, which will require the development and application of new experimental assays and/or computational methods.

For general information on Post Doc's at The ICR can be found here.

Key Requirements

The successful candidate must meet the following criteria:
- PhD in quantitative or biological subject, or likely to be awarded PhD in the near future.
  • Undergraduate degree in biological or quantitative subject.
  • Appropriate publication in the subject area for career stage
  • Ability to interpret the scientific literature and incorporate this into the project
  • Proven ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team
  • Proven ability to maintain accurate and up to date records

Please refer to the attached PDTF job description pack where all essential, and desirable, criteria is listed.

Directorate Information:

The Centre for Evolution and Cancer (CEC), within the Division of Molecular Pathology, is a multidisciplinary centre, comprising around 40 staff dedicated to understanding cancer evolution and leveraging this knowledge for translational benefit. Our interests span early detection through to treatment of metastatic disease. The CEC brings together expertise in evolutionary theory, computational biology and bioinformatics together with cutting-edge research ability in cell and molecular biology to provide a stimulating and creative interdisciplinary environment where new approaches to tackling cancer can thrive.

Department Information:

The Preclinical Modelling of Paediatric Cancer Evolution team (PCE team) led by Dr. Alejandra Bruna is interested in studying the molecular mechanisms underlying paediatric cancer evolutionary processes leading to therapy resistance and relapse.

We are based at the ICR Sutton site within the Centre for Evolution and Cancer, located in the outstanding facilities of the newly opened Centre for Cancer Drug Discovery building.

Recent evidence suggesting a major role of cell plasticity and epigenetic rewiring in therapeutic resistance has sparked interest on the role of non-genetic evolution during cancer progression. Our main goal is to identify plasticity, hereditability and cell state dynamics using paediatric cancer models representative of the disease in patients. To this end we are using and developing innovative technologies that couple scRNA-seq and cell ancestry information. We predict a better understanding into these processes is a recipe to identify novel treatment strategies using evolutionary steering of plasticity which may lead tumours to extinction.
You will be joining a highly diverse and interdisciplinary team of about 7 people, consisting of biologists and computational scientists. Our ideal candidate will have previous computational modelling experience and a keen interest in cancer evolution and genomics and strong quantitative skills. You will be co-supervised by Professor Trevor Graham (Director of the Centre for Evolution and Cancer) and head of the Genomics and Evolutionary Dynamics team which combine molecular and cellular biology together with mathematical and computational modelling to study the evolution of malignancy.
This project is also shared with Professor Janet Shipley (Division Head of Molecular Pathology)

We encourage all applicants to access the job pack attached for more detailed information regarding this role. For an informal discussion regarding the role, please contact Dr Alejandra Bruna via email on [email protected] (Please DO NOT send your application to Dr Alejandra Bruna, but apply via the e-recruitment system on our website www.icr.ac.uk)
