About us

Biological Services is an integral part of UCL’s biomedical research efforts, providing expert services to researchers primarily within the School of Life and Medical Sciences. The department is composed of around 80 staff based across a number of UCL’s sites in London. We work collaboratively with researchers to deliver an outstanding service and ensure that a high standard of animal welfare is maintained throughout.

About the role

To be a pro-active member of the Biological services team in a multi-species facility. Responsibility for overseeing breeding programmes, husbandry, monitoring and maintenance of experimental animals. Applicants must show an interest in animal care and have previous experience in animal husbandry within a research environment. The successful applicant will be expected to be able to work unsupervised after induction training. The post holder will be required to work unsociable hours, this will include some weekend working and working outside of normal working hours as well as occasional work at the different sites covered by Biological Services.

About you

* General animal husbandry and maintenance of transgenic/immunocompromised mouse breeding programmes and species housed within the facility. * To develop and maintain an understanding of cage/animal bio-security; * To interact with researchers on animal health and welfare; *To operate the mechanical cleaning of cages; * To prepare cages for use and distribute cages around the Facility; * To carry out general housekeeping duties within the Facility; * To clean rooms within the Facility and handle waste disposal; * To accurately maintain records within UCL’s animal management system, including breeding records; * To handle deliveries of goods to the Facility; * Either hold a Personal Individual License or work toward obtaining one with a view to carry out minor regulated procedures. * Set up and assist with in house training courses. * To observe and maintain an awareness of Fire and Health and Safety Regulations; * To observe and maintain an awareness of Biological Services’ Standard Operating Procedures and other governance arrangements; *To carry out any other duties which are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by.
