We are looking for candidate to manage laboratory activities within the IRR building complex at the Edinburgh Bioquarter. Working within a team of other laboratory and tissue culture managers you will provide specialist Chemical and Biochemical advice to institute members regards the procurement, use and disposal of chemicals and chemistry equipment and maintain an institute wide COSHH registry. You will have responsibility for the management of the institute chemistry area and support of the teams based there. Responsibilities will include equipment servicing, management of consumables and provision of advice and training to research and commercial projects, with frequent liaison with members of the Bioquarter and chemistry research community.
The Opportunity:
The Chemistry area is currently based within the CIR in the Queens Medical Research Institute but will move in 2023 to a custom designed chemistry suite for 50 people in the new CTR building on the IRR complex which will accommodate over 1000 staff and students. Embedded adjacent to the centres for inflammation research, Reproductive Health and Regenerative medicine the chemistry area will be a hub for collaborative non-silo’d research with a core of chemistry investigators working closely and collaboratively with academics from a variety of disciplines. The post holder will operate alongside other core funded laboratory managers with overlapping roles for laboratory support but with specialisms in support for Tissue culture, Genetic and Molecular Biology, Infection research and estates management. Although this post is the Chemistry specialist a natural evolution of further speciality is expected and encouraged, so significant opportunities for training and development will be offered.
Your skills and attributes for success:
- PhD (or about to submit PhD thesis) in Chemistry, Biological Chemistry or similar
- Hands-on experience of equipment maintenance, including HPLC, MS, purification systems, evaporators
- Experience in analytical techniques (including HPLC, mass spectrometry and UV-Vis spectroscopy)
- Practical research skills, particularly in synthesis and purification of peptides/proteins and also organic molecules.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
