The Cyber Defence & Risk (CyDR) team plays an integral role in protecting the UK against external and internal cyber security threats to ensure that our Armed Forces have the strong cyber defences they need. The team is responsible for enabling Defence, through the provision of specialist cyber security services across UK Defence including industry partners, other Government Departments and working our international allies. Services provided by CyDR include:

  • MOD defensive cyber strategy and transformation roadmap development
  • Development of cyber security policy and architecture standards
  • Managing and driving mitigation of Departmental cyber risk
  • Security assurance and accreditation support and advice to transformation programmes

Job description

Effective policy is essential to delivering cyber security across the wider Defence community. To be effective, it must be properly considered, clearly articulated and coherent. This role will bring together all aspects of policy relevant to cyber security, including technical and business aspects, addressing system design and delivery and ensuring that policy and guidance is sustainable and forward looking.

The Cyber Security Technical Policy Assistant Head works within the Governance, Risk and Compliance team, within the CyDR Directorate and is responsible to the Cyber Security Policy Deputy Head for ensuring:

  • The leadership and delivery of departmental technical and business policy and guidance pertaining to cyber security, including to the wider Defence community.
  • Leadership of the CyDR Technical Policy team.

Person specification

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead delivery of Defence policy and guidance relating to cyber security and cover technical aspects of information technology and operational technology systems.

  • Ensure coherence and clarity of policy.

  • Maintain understanding of future technology direction to ensure policy is forward looking.

  • Maintain close liaison with key stakeholders across Defence and other government departments, to support wider policy activities.

  • Line management of Policy team personnel, to ensure workloads are balanced efficiently, resource issues are escalated promptly and personnel are professional and motivated.

  • Represent Cyber Defence & Risk team interests at internal and external meetings as required.

  • Support the development of mechanisms to drive continuous improvement and encourage the sharing of best practice.

If you have the following knowledge, skills and experience, we would love to hear from you!

  • Technical understanding of ICT and Operational Technology

Desirable qualifications: CISMP, CISSP or CCP; BSc or HND or equivalent in an ICT or Engineering related discipline.

Desirable memberships: CIISec or BCS.

Desirable experience or knowledge of:

  • Cyber Security Governance
  • Cyber Security Policy and Standards
  • Cyber Security Legal & Regulatory Environment & Compliance
  • Risk understanding and mitigation

Allowances: A Recruitment and Retention Allowance (RRA) of up to £9k per annum may be payable with this post, paid in increments upon reaching the required level of competence.

Dependent on the business need, there may be a requirement to travel to meetings within the UK (or potentially occasional overseas visits).

If not already held, the successful candidate will be required to undergo DV clearance.

Location: This position can be based at Main Building, London; RAF Wyton, Huntingdon or MOD Corsham, Wiltshire.

Work location will be agreed once the successful candidate has been selected.

This job role is suitable for hybrid working, which is an informal, non-contractual and voluntary arrangement, blending a balance of attendance in the workplace (the permanent duty station, which is based on business assessment of where the work is best done) and working from home as a personal choice (if the role is suitable for this). If you are successful, any opportunities for hybrid working will be discussed with you prior to you taking up your post.
