Job Description
The phlebotomy department at Royal Berkshire Hospital is looking for a band 3 experienced phlebotomist to support with the daily provision of quality blood collection services . We are an extensive department that services both wards and outpatient clinics. We are looking for one who is hardworking, enthusiastic and have previous experience in a similar role to join our team.
Post holder will be required to collect samples from inpatients, patients attending outpatient clinics. Post holder is required to liaise with clinicians, other healthcare professionals including laboratory staff, with patients and their representatives and with commercial suppliers. Post holder will be required to perform a range of venepuncture techniques in a variety of clinical settings and will work without direct supervision.
They will also be required to perform reception and telephone duties.
The Trust has designated the prevention and control of infection and the full implementation of the Health Act (2006) as a core component in the organisation’s clinical governance, managing risk and patient safety programmes. In consequence, all employees are expected to: -
1) Following consistently high standards of infection control practice, especially with reference to decontamination, adherence to dress/uniform code and for clinical staff, aseptic technique.
2) Being aware of and follow all Trust infection control guidelines and procedures relevant to their work.
3) Participating in annual mandatory training update
Safeguarding Children and Adults
The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust takes the issues of Safeguarding Children and Adults very seriously. All employees have a responsibility to support the Trust in its duties by: -
1) Attending mandatory training on Safeguarding children and adults.
1. Collects, using venepuncture procedures, blood samples from inpatients and from patients attending the outpatient clinics within the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust sites.
2. Monitors and maintains the health, safety and security of self and patients during the venepuncture procedure. Practices within risk management/ occupational health legislation and Trust procedures.
3. Collects samples from patients in high risk categories and is aware of potential hazards. Is able to follow agreed protocol to minimise risk to self and others.
Is aware of the clinical conditions and precautions that are necessary for sample quality to be maintained during the venepuncture procedure. This includes site selection, correct use of tourniquet and selection of blood sample bottles.
Ensures that blood sample bottles are accurately labelled and barcoded in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
