Our team is known for its extensive in-house expertise and continual drive to innovate within the industry. The Design Manager you will report into the Head of Engineering supporting the Energy business unit. Successful candidates will have management and technical responsibility for a team of Design Coordinators working across a portfolio of design and build projects in the Energy sector.


Following the ‘One Murphy’ approach, we’re able to deliver all aspects of the projects we work on. J. Murphy & Sons has designed, constructed, and commissioned projects for clients such as National Grid, SSE and Ørsted, on both transmission and distribution networks within the Energy sector.

What you will be doing

  • Lead Design and Design Management requirements at tender stage and allocate resources as appropriate during tender and upon successful award
  • Integrate multiple engineering disciplines and their associated designers to ensure successful project designs
  • Undertake the role of Principal Design Representative on project(s) ensuring design information is being suitable managed and communicated to the various roles and compliant with the requirements of CDM 2015 Regulations
  • Provide technical and management assistance to design managers and design co-ordinators throughout the project lifecycle
  • Involvement in the development of business unit and Group Design Management continual process improvement activities
  • Review submissions as directed for technical compliance, quality and completeness
  • Allocate tasks to individuals/companies as required and maintain associated RAC.
  • Develop and assist the project Planners with maintaining the design and engineering aspect of programmes
  • Monitor and expedite key engineering programme issues including the procurement of services and equipment to the Business Unit Procurement function
  • Review temporary works and ensure appropriate consideration of constructability and permanent works
  • Monitor, co-ordinate, and manage the design by consultants, in-house teams, suppliers, interface contractors, and outsourced designers as appropriate
  • Manage compliance with Standards and Client requirements, and assist in monitoring to ensure working to standard requirements
  • Ensure an understanding of, and an influence on the contracts Design Consultants are working under including their fees, schedule of services, programme, and liabilities and warranties
  • Review and comment/agree the payment applications from consultants and pass to the contract surveyor for processing and payment
  • Represent the department, when necessary, at internal and external meetings and in the absence of the Senior Engineering Manager
  • Line managing a team of design coordinators. Assisting in their development and learning.

Who we are looking for:

  • Chartered Engineer within a UK engineering institute
  • Experience carrying out the role of Principal Designer Representative under CDM 2015
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary design packages on Transmission and Distribution projects
  • LCDAE (Lead Contractor Design Approval Engineer) experience on NG or other TSO organisations
  • Track record of Managing complex multidisciplinary Engineering projects
  • Experience with EDMS systems
