SLR has a fantastic opportunity for an engineer with a background in material recovery and recycling, particularly around plastics, to join its busy Process Engineering team and support development of the business strategy in the plastics recycling sector. The successful applicant will work on a combination of project execution and delivery and business development activities for both new and existing clients within the recycling, waste management, industrial and infrastructure sectors. The role will be focused on traditional and advanced plastics recycling and recovery technologies, including chemical recycling and is based in the UK. There are also opportunities to support SLR’s other regions across the world.
Our Engineering service line has expertise across a range of engineering sectors including civil, geotechnical, chemical, process, materials, and mechanical engineering, with particular expertise in solid waste management/treatment and industrial wastewater and technologies. We work with many other disciplines across SLR and on a wide range of projects in terms of their length and complexity and the team provides clients with expertise at all stages of a project from concept designs to commissioning and testing and on to performance improvement. The Process Engineering team provides clients with expertise at all project stages.
The role
The successful candidate will work as a Senior Process Engineer in our process engineering team. You will be expected to work independently and within a team to deliver a variety of projects. You will have knowledge and a good understating of a range of plastics and recycling processes, technologies and challenges, and experience of working on recycling projects and facilities as an engineer, project delivery manager or operator. The successful candidate will have an excellent opportunity to develop their career in an experienced team of engineering professionals.
Your Role
Your work will be a mixture of site-based and office/home based work including:
- Assisting with review of third-party designs, technical proposals and operational models and writing of reports for funders;
- Preparing technical and procurement documentation and schematics/drawings, and supporting SLR’s Owner’s Engineer role in plant construction projects;
- Assisting with preparation of models to determine plant energy and mass balances, emission rates and financial/operational models including thermodynamic calculations and basic financial metrics;
- On-site inspection, witnessing, verification and supervision of construction, commissioning, and testing projects and troubleshooting of operational plant including waste and recycling operations (thermal, mechanical, biological, chemical) and other renewable energy and sustainability-based projects; and
- Assisting other teams within SLR with technical and process engineering aspects of diverse projects.
- Some travel to client sites and so on will be required as a part of this role
You will work with others in the process engineering team and other disciplines across the business including the Advisory, Environmental Management and Compliance, Land and Water and Environmental Specialist Services Groups on a wide variety of different projects.
You will be based out of one of our UK offices, though SLR offer a flexible hybrid working strategy to meet the needs of our employees wherever possible.

About you
To be successful within the role, we envisage you'd be able to demonstrate the following:
- Degree in Engineering
- Experience in plastics recovery and recycling, or related field such as chemical recycling
- Experience of Health and Safety at Work and Process Safety
- Excellent report writing skills
- IT literate, particularly with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Must be able to work independently and within a team
- Good communication skills
- Numerate and confident with data and basic modelling
- Well organised and logical thinker
- Full, current, clean driving licence – in the UK
