Job Description

Job Introduction

We have an exciting opportunity for a Trust Grade Doctor (ST1-2 equivalent) in Emergency Medicine who is looking for a new challenge, wants to make their mark, and make a positive difference to an NHS Trust based in East of England. You would be joining an NHS Trust committed to clinical education and cutting-edge research, the Hospital is offering an outstanding development Program for the right candidate.

The successful candidate will work within the Emergency Department (ED) which has approximately 105,000 attendances per annum of which 25% are children. The Emergency Department is located at the front of the hospital and has recently undergone a number of changes.

Structure

The senior and junior staffing in the department includes the following.

21 – Specialty Doctors and Higher Specialty Trainees ST4-6

24 – Junior Doctors (ACCS CT1, ST3 EM, GPST, FY2, FY3 Clinical fellows and Trust Grade ST1-2)

6 – Advanced Nurse Practitioners (4 seniors and 2 trainees),

1 – Physician Associate In addition, there are adequate number of ENPs and GPs to run the UTC.

There is shop-floor senior cover (Registrar level) 24/7 and Consultant presence from 8am to midnight.

Main Responsibilities

The Trust is committed to the development and progression of all its Junior Doctors. The Emergency Department will support and encourage the Junior Doctors in their education and training although this is not a training post. In return the Department expects the post holder to adhere to the Trust’s values, policies and internal professional standards at all times to ensure patient safety and smooth running of the department.

Comply with the GMC code of conduct and requirements of Duties of a Doctor

  • Assess, investigate and treat patients presenting to the ED and make appropriate decisions regarding referral or discharge in a timely manner
  • To work in all areas of the ED under supervision (Majors, Minors, Paeds ED, RED, Resus & CDU)
  • Work within the limitations and seek appropriate help to ensure patient safety
  • Maintain Punctuality, attend Board rounds and ensure required break/rest
  • Communicate and build good working relationship with the multidisciplinary team within ED and other Specialties
  • Ensure optimal record keeping and discharge summaries to guarantee continuity of care 4
  • Actively participate in the departmental teaching, audits and Quality improvement projects
  • Realize and be committed to adult and child safeguarding requirements
  • Fulfil the statutory and mandatory training programme as per the Trust policy
  • Uphold confidentiality of all patient records and Trust information
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment and adhere to Trust’s infection control standards
  • Use study leave appropriately to keep up the knowledge and skills required for the post
  • Be aware of Annual leave policy and avail the entitlement spread across the year
  • Conform with departmental sickness reporting and return to work procedures; follow Staff Health and Wellbeing policy of the Trust
  • Communicate with the named Clinical Supervisor, agree on professional development plan and fulfil periodic appraisal as per Trust policy

The Ideal Candidate

Education and Qualification

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Eligible for full GMC registration and hold a current licence to practise
  • Evidence of achievement of foundation competences from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent

Desirable

  • Previous experience in NHS
  • Experience at CT1/SHO level in Emergency Medicine/Acute Medicine/ITU or equivalent
  • MRCEM Part A/FRCEM Primary

Experience

Essential

  • Competent in history taking, examination and initial management of acute presentations
  • Able to recognise acutely ill patients and prioritise appropriately
  • Demonstrates understanding of the principles of Audit, Quality improvement and evidence based medicine
  • ALS (provider) or equivalent

Desirable

  • ATLS, APLS or EPALS or equivalent
  • Evidence of Audit or Quality improvement projects

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Realise the limitations and able to seek appropriate help
  • Ability to work effectively with multi-professional teams

Desirable

  • Aptitude for practical skills
  • Capacity to use logical/lateral thinking to solve problems or make decisions, indicating an analytical/scientific approach

Personal Qualities

Essential

  • Good Communication skills – oral and written, Good record keeping Realise the limitations and able to seek appropriate help
  • Committed, punctual and reliable
  • Resilient and able to adopt to demands
